California Rail Tour July 30 - August 6, 2016

Reserve your spot today for this unforgettable trip to California next summer from $2445. This guaranteed departure will take you to Sacramento, San Francisco, Yosemite, and more!

Begin your trip in S acramento, where you will meet your tour director for a brief orientation and then board the Sacramento RiverTrain for a fun and insightful evening aboard the train. The next day,  enjoy a tour of colorful Sacramento. Your first stop is the Capitol Building, recently restored to its turn-of-the-century splendor; next, visit the Old Sacramento Historic District, where you can step back in time to the era of the Pony Express, the '49ers, and on to the California State Railroad Museum. With over 225,000 square feet of exhibition space, the buildings within the Railroad Museum complex use stimulating exhibits, enthusiastic and knowledgeable docents, and beautifully restored railroad cars and locomotives to illustrate railroad history in California and the West.

Our next stop will be  Redwood Country after a brief stop in Fort Bragg. While in Redwood Country, you will board the Skunk Train, which follows the same coastal "Redwood Route" as it has since 1885. Built as a logging railroad, the Skunk line began that year as a logical vehicle for moving massive redwood logs to Mendocino Coast sawmills from the rugged back country. Steam passenger service was started in 1904 and discontinued in 1925 when the self-powered, yellow "Skunk" rail cars were inaugurated. The little trains were quickly nicknamed for their original gas engines, which prompted folks to say, "You can smell 'em before you can see 'em."  After the train ride we'll stop in Healdsburg and the Rodney Strong Winery.

Next, we'll  travel east to California's beautiful Napa Wine Country and the Napa Station, where you will board the Napa Valley Wine Train and enjoy a 3-course lunch while enjoying a relaxing three-hour, thirty-six mile round-trip journey. Disembark at Grgich Hills Winery for a one-hour private tour and tasting directed by a member of the Grgich Hills staff. Then we're off to San Francisco where you will see the beautiful Civic Center, Golden Gate Park, the Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, the Presidio and Sausalito

The next day, you will enter the domain of the giant redwoods, the tallest living things on earth. You'll have a chance to marvel at these incredible trees first-hand as you visit the Roaring Camp, a former mining town, and now a bustling mountain retreat. You'll board the Roaring Camp and Big Trees Railroad and travel through redwood groves to the summit of Bear Mountain as conductors narrate the history of Roaring Camp, the railroad, and the forest. Depart the redwoods and travel toward the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean, including a stop at Carmel-by-the-Sea. Next, travel to Monterey, where you'll enjoy a tour of the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

On the next day, you'll enter Yosemite National Park for where you'll board the Valley Tram and travel to Yosemite's most famous scenic highlights, including El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil Falls, and the geologically-fascinating Half Dome.
You'll then arrive in Jamestown, CA to tour Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, which is home to one of America's last intact, still-operating railroad roundhouses. The last stop of the trip will be back in Sacramento, where you'll stop at the Marshall Gold Discovery Park, which features a museum, many original and restored buildings, and costumed volunteers.
