Fight Those Winter Blues

The days are shorter in the winter, which can cause many people to have disturbed sleep. There is less daylight, and less daylight usually means less activity time, especially outdoors. This can lead to depression, over eating, and a lower immune system. Try to expose yourself to as much daytime light as possible, eat healthy and fit a little exercise into each day.

National Sleep Therapy's Eric Cohen Discusses Ways to Improve CPAP Patient Compliance, Manage Sleep Therapy

"Adherence is something the patient should want to do so they can sleep better, whereas compliance is something they need to do for insurance and reimbursement purposes," Eric Cohen, President of National Sleep Therapy, told several hundred participants in a recent national webcast on CPAP compliance. The webcast was sponsored by medical device maker ResMed in association with Sleep Review Magazine (www.sleepreviewmag.com)

Cohen, who previously worked in new product innovation for Fortune 500 companies, noted, "Helping and coaching a few patients along the compliance road is easy, but doing so for thousands of people, all with different needs and experiences, requires a more sophisticated approach. To achieve the best health outcomes, you must build a strong relationship and become a trusted advisor."

CPAP Users Stay More Alert, Have Better Focus on Driving - National Sleep Therapy Survey Reveals
Sleep Deprivation: A National Epidemic

Chronic fatigue is an epidemic in the U.S.: An estimated 18 million suffer from sleep-disordered breathing (sleep apnea), yet incredibly, a large majority of those afflicted have yet to be diagnosed. These people could be described as accidents waiting to happen, whether on the highway or at the workplace.

AAA found that one-third of drivers admit to having fallen asleep while driving at some point in their lives. Sleepiness slows reaction time, decreases awareness and impairs judgment - similar to drugs or alcohol.

In an online survey conducted by National Sleep Therapy, 120 individuals with a history of sleep apnea who had begun physician-prescribed CPAP therapy: 48% reported they are able to stay awake more during the day; 40% reported they are better able to focus on driving and tasks; 28% report to have a better attitude; and 21% say they feel better overall.

Clinician Question and Answer image

Question To You:
Do you suspect a friend might have sleep apnea?

Take Action:

Stop for a minute to consider whether you have any friends or family members that you've noticed may frequently be tired. Now, reach out to them! Sometimes it's the question from a trusted friend or family member that motivates people to take action. You could be the spark that makes them take action and become happier or healthier. Suggest they see your doctor and perhaps even offer to go with them. You took the first step to achieve a healthy life, maybe you can help them do the same.

'Meet' Bodybuilding Legend 'Big Mike' Katz During 'CPAP Talk - Live!' - This Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 7 PM (ET)

Remember the 1977 film Pumping Iron?

Here's your chance to 'meet' bodybuilding champ 'Big Mike' Katz who was featured in the movie along with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno (The Incredible Hulk) .

'Big Mike' was a champion bodybuilder, winning major titles, launching a chain of fitness centers, traveling to judge bodybuilding competitions. But around age 60, he found that he was always tired, with less energy. The doctor recommended a sleep test where he learned that though he was in bed for 8 hours each night, he wasn't getting the deep sleep he needed. He recalls, "I learned I was having almost 50 apnea episodes per hour and my oxygen levels were dropping dramatically."

Now 70, wherever he goes, Mike takes his CPAP along. "I get a good night's sleep. But most important, I don't want to sleep through my grandkids' childhood -  waking up when they're 16, wondering where the time went."
