National Osteoporosis Month

Did you know that two million broken bones occur every year in the U.S. due to osteoporosis? It's true, but most people get their fracture fixed without ever realizing they have osteoporosis or low bone mass.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends five steps to improve bone health and prevent osteoporosis:

1. Get the calcium and vitamin D you need
every day.

2. Do regular weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises.

3. Don't smoke and don't drink too much alcohol.

4. Talk to your healthcare provider about your chance of getting osteoporosis and ask when you should have a bone density test.

5. Take an osteoporosis medication when it's right for you.

Have questions about your bone health? Contact your Primary Care Provider or Quincy Medical Group Orthopedic Department, 217-222-6550, ext. 3091.

Melanoma & Skin Cancer Awareness Month

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. UV damage can also cause wrinkles and blotches or spots on your skin. The good news is that skin cancer can be prevented, and it can almost always be cured when it's found and treated early.

Take simple steps today to protect your skin:

  • Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Put on sunscreen every 2 hours and after you swim or sweat.
  • Cover up with long sleeves and a hat.
  • Check your skin regularly for changes.

Quincy Medical Group's Dermatology Department and Riverside Dermatology are here to support you in your skin health journey. Contact QMG Dermatology at (217) 222-6550, ext. 3117 and Riverside Dermatology at 573-248-3700.
