Code Iowa Launches 2nd Year in Support of "Hour of Code"

The Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council and Code.org have joined forces to localize the "Hour of Code," an international effort to have every student in the world try one of hour computer coding during Computer Science Education Week in December.

Last year with your help, 643,038 students in Iowa completed the challenge, and English Valleys Jr/Sr High School in North English received a $10,000 technology award from Code.org.

Thanks to a $20,000 gift from Google, the STEM Council has launched Code Iowa for a second year. Code.org will select one participating school in the state for a $10,000 technology award, and the STEM Council will select five more schools to receive $4,000 technology awards- one in each STEM region that did not receive the Code.org award.

Every school that signs up to participate by  November 16 will become a Certified Code Iowa Partner. Sixty teachers from those schools will be eligible to attend free, K-5 Code Studio workshops in the spring. To learn more or to apply for the awards, visit www.IowaSTEM.gov/CodeIowa.

DeWitt Manufacturing Day Event
On October 9, the Southeast Iowa STEM Hub partnered with DeWitt Chamber and Development Company and Central DeWitt schools to host a day honoring manufacturing in Clinton County.  Over 750 students and their teachers engaged in hands-on activities highlighting high-skill and high-paying jobs in the area.  A special thank you to the companies who participated!  For more information about a national focus on manufacturing careers visit http://www.mfgday.com/

The Kirkwood Regional Center at UI Is Officially Open!

The University of Iowa/Kirkwood Community College Regional Center held its formal grand opening on October 8th, hosting dignitaries from both partner institutions, teachers, students, Corridor businesses, economic development groups from 7 counties, and local neighbors. Over 300 people attended the event and enjoyed a tour of the building, which actually opened for students on August 24th.

Hosting the UI College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Engineering, and the SE Region STEM Hub along with the Kirkwood High School Academies, the center offers opportunities for students, parents, and business and industry to prepare Iowa students for high demand, high tech 21st century careers.

A key component of the partnership is the home base for the SE Region STEM Hub managed by Kristine Bullock. The office provides STEM scale up curriculum, STEM festivals, and externship opportunities for a 18 county area. The center also is home to a TILE classroom, a STEM Innovator classroom led by the UI Colleges of Education and Business in collaboration with Kirkwood, a Project Lead the Way training site, and of course, a Herky on parade!

The Regional Center can also be used for camps and continuing education activities and is located a few hundred feet from the UI National Driving Simulator, the BioVentures Center (Business start ups), and the UI Hygienic Lab.

Over 350 area students from 7 school districts began academy classes in August, and with the unique partnership between the University and Kirkwood (believed to be the first of its kind with a Regent school and Community College) the enrollment numbers are expected to double in 3 years!

STEM Education Equity Symposium

On October 19, The University of Iowa Public Policy Center held a symposium called STEM Education Equity: Policies to Create Opportunities in Rural Iowa to discuss the opportunities and challenges of strengthening STEM education in Iowa. The symposium was p lanned in collaboration with the University of Iowa College of Education and with the support of  Iowa NSF EPSCoR.

The symposium included panels that discussed the Next Generation Science Standards, school-business partnerships, and legislative and student perspectives on diversity in the STEM Pipeline. Kristine Bullock, the manager of the SE STEM Hub, served as the moderator for the School-Business Partnerships panel, which focused on how educators and local businesses can work together to bring STEM education into rural communities.

"Education isn't a people problem; it's a systems problem," explained John Carver, the Superintendent of Howard-Winneshiek Schools, adding to the discussion of how businesses are often highly interested in participating in educational programs but need assistance with connecting with schools and educators.

Students from North Tama, Central DeWitt, and West Liberty schools share their STEM experiences as a part of the student panel

Scale-Up Highlight: Engineering Is Elementary

One of the STEM Council's Scale-Up programs that has shown great success this year is Engineering is Elementary (EiE)! This program is a research-based, standards-driven, and classroom-tested curriculum that integrates technology and engineering concepts and skills with elementary science topics. This Scale-Up is designed for students in grade levels 1-6 and is designed to engage students in the engineering design process.

Diane Berner, a K-5 TAG/Extended Learning educator in the Keokuk Community School District, was an EiE Scale-Up awardee this school year. Berner explained that she chose to apply for the EiE Scale-Up to use with her fourth and fifth grade students in part because "the recently adopted Next Generation Science Standards include engineering."

The Keokuk classroom has partnered with Siemens Wind Energy as a part of the EiE curriculum unit this year; last year, the students worked with Keokuk Municipal Waterworks as a part of their EiE water filter unit.

Diane Berner described the EiE Scale-Up as quite beneficial to her students, saying that "their confidence has improved" and that the "process requires them to think more abstractly."

As far as any advice she had for teachers interested in participating in Scale-Up programs, Berner stated the following: "I would highly recommend participating in the Scale Up program. I am proud to be a part of it."
