From the Desk of Bob Simmons,  Executive Director
November 2015 - In This Issue:
Gratitude

We have so much to be grateful for but too often we do not take the time during our busy days to spend a few moments being consciously thankful.

As we approach our national day of Thanksgiving and the year-end holidays for people of many faiths and traditions, it is a time to remember what we are grateful for at the Council.

We are grateful for the more than 250 volunteers who help advocate for the best interests of children in high-conflict custody cases through our Custody Advocacy Program. We are especially grateful for Mary Schilli who coordinated those volunteers for over five years as a volunteer herself, and for Ann Dorsett of McGuireWoods who has undertaken the job this year.

We are grateful for the volunteers who lead the Council as Board members, for the former Board members who continue to share their advice and guidance, and for the community volunteers who serve on our committees and help with our events. We are especially grateful for our immediate past Board President Bruce Steen of McGuireWoods who served two years during a challenging time of transition, our current Board President Ed O'Keefe of Moore & Van Allen who is about to end 18 months of leadership during a time of continuing transition, and our Board President-Elect Brandon Lofton of Robinson, Bradshaw & Hinson who is about to begin an 18-month term during an exciting time of restoration, renewal, and expansion.

We are grateful for all of you who have joined the family of child advocates to assure that all children in Mecklenburg County will have a better opportunity to grow up safe, healthy, and educated. You help children overcome obstacles to find better paths to their futures. You have stood up for children and spoken out for them. You have imagined their possibilities and you have contributed to unlocking their potential. We cannot name all of you individually in this message, but please know that we are grateful to each of you.

Thank you all.

Host Ginger Kelly introduces
Bob Simmons to VCS guests

The Voices for Children Society met at the home of Jim and Ginger Kelly in October for food, fellowship and inspiration.  The VCS is made up of individuals who contribute at a leadership gift level of $1,000 or more each year.  This generous support is critical to the programs of the Council and helps to ensure our ability to serve those most at risk. To learn more about the VCS and how you can join in this vital effort, contact Amy Tribble, Director of Development, at 704-372-7961 or make your contribution of $1,000 or more today  here.
Giving Tuesday Has Taken Off!
After battling the crowds and getting amazing deals on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, wouldn't it feel great to do something for "good"?

Here's your chance. Giving Tuesday, coming up on December 1, is a global day dedicated to giving. In Charlotte we're celebrating #GivingTuesdayCLT with 107 other local nonprofits. Together we're working to raise $2,000,000 for our community!

This is going to be an amazing day of giving, unlike anything Charlotte has seen before - and you can help!

* Like us on social media and share our posts (don't forget to use the hashtag #GivingTuesdayCLT).
* Make a gift of funds or goods to our agency.
* Check out the GivingTuesdayCLT web site for more ways to get involved.

Then join us at a celebration event hosted by Heist Brewery on Giving Tuesday, December 1. Let's gather to encourage all to give on that day as well as wrap up a successful campaign!

If you'd like to make a donation to the #GivingTuesdayCLT campaign you can donate online from November 10 through December 1 as all donations made during the campaign will count toward the goal.  Thank you!

In-coming President Brandon Lofton, Ed O'Keefe and Bob Simmons
Council for Children's Rights board president,  Ed O'Keefe , was honored on November 18 as the Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year at the National Philanthropy Day luncheon, hosted by the Charlotte chapter the Association of Fund-raising Professionals (AFP). Each year, the AFP honors individuals, groups, organizations and businesses that, through their hard work and dedication, have enhanced philanthropy, their communities and the world.  Several organizations, including the United Way of Central Carolinas and Council for Children's Rights, nominated Ed for this award for his philanthropic efforts and leadership on their behalf.  Read more here.

ACC Challenge Completed
Council for Children's Rights recently participated in the United Way of Central Carolina's new charitable partnership with the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and their Championship Football game that will be held in Charlotte in December. The ACC-United Way Reading & Attendance Challenge, was announced on October 15. Working with CMS's Truancy program, the Council challenged five of our client-children to improve attendance for one month (October 15 through November 17).  For their efforts they, along with a parent, will be attending the December championship game.
