St. James Catholic School December E-Newsletter

Mission Statement:  St. James Catholic School is a Christ-centered community inspired by the charism of the IHM Sisters that prepares students for a life of learning and service to God.

Merry Christmas!

St. James students presented the story of Jesus' birth. It was such a beautiful play with many talented students performing and sharing their talents to tell the story of Christmas! Many thanks to Sister Carolyn Braun for coordinating this for the school. God Bless you all and a very Merry Christmas!
Year of Mercy

St. James was well represented at the Cathedral with Bishop Hartmayer as he opened the sealed Holy Door on Sunday. The opening signifies the start of the Jubilee Year of Mercy which Pope Francis has called for and which will continue through the Feast of Christ the King in 2016.

Renewal of Vows and
Feast of the Immaculate Conception

St. James Catholic School is blessed to have the Sisters, servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary at the heart of our school! During the Mass celebrating the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the Sisters renewed their vows. Thank you Sisters for guiding, protecting, and showing unfaltering love each day in the leadership of our great school! Left to right are Sister Lisa Golden, Sister Carolyn Bennett, and Sister Carolyn Braun.
Collecting for the Needy

A huge thanks to all of our families who brought in gifts and food for needy families to celebrate Christmas! We are so grateful for your ever-giving love and generosity.
Science Fair Winners

St. James School would like to congratulate the winners of this year's Science Fair! First place was earned by Lindsay Murray for her project "How do different soils affect the growth of marjoram?" which tested the growth of sweet marjoram in sand, clay, potting mix, and topsoil. Griffin Montavon came in second with his project "Water = concrete?" which examined if hitting water from a height was really the same as hitting concrete. Third place went to Cody Cowan for his proj ect "Which type of 0.357 ammo penetrates the furthest?" which examined the penetration of full metal jacket, wadcutter, and hollow point ammunition. Congratulations to all the students who worked so hard to plan and carry out their projects and to Mr. Hotard for his fantastic guidance. The school is proud of all of you!

Thank you Veterans

St. James students went downtown to support the Veterans Day Parade!  We also held a Military Appreciation Luncheon to celebrate active and retired military in our school and parish!

Active Learning

Clockwise from top left: Third graders worked hard in the school's organic garden.  They recently harvested carrots and broccoli.  Mrs. Mayberry, St. James' first grade teacher was voted best local teacher in Chick-Fil-A's teacher challenge.  Sixth graders used their "essay telephones" to peer edit the essays they wrote on economics during and after Communist rule of Eastern Europe. Second graders at St. James put on a play presenting the First Thanksgiving! Members of the National Junior Honor Society attended a team building program at Epworth by the Sea, where they participated in many exciting activities!  These are all great learning activities!
