Salt Lake Tribune:
"The subject of Pioneer Theatre Company's new comedy, "I Hate Hamlet," should appeal to the theater haters who think of "Hamlet" as "algebra onstage" as well as the lovers who consider the Bard's story of the young haunted Danish prince "the most beautiful play ever written..."

Deseret News:
"The play's first act ends with the TV actor alone seeing the shadow of the striking profile of a man upon the wall as curtains blow and lightning illuminates the room, and the actor cries out: "I hate Hamlet!" The play comically deals with the question of just how relevant William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" is for modern audiences..."

Utah Daily Chronicle:
"Many students hate Shakespeare's timeless classic "Hamlet," mostly because it has been forced on them throughout their educational lives. However, Pioneer Theater Company is aiming to give students a few reasons to love Hamlet with its presentation of the comedy "I Hate Hamlet" by Paul Rudnick..."

Paul Rudnick has Barrymore describe himself in I Hate Hamlet as "a light comedian" (81), and that's certainly nearer the truth than labeling him a Shakespearean actor.

And yet, Shakespeare's most amazing and challenging character cast his spell over Barrymore as over so many...

  SYNOPSIS & CONTENT ADVISORY

SYNOPSIS: Andrew Rally has just become rich and famous playing the lead in a TV show, and his agent persuades him to gain a little theatre credibility by playing the role of Hamlet in a New York production of the play. Rally immediately regrets agreeing to do the part-he's over his head and knows it, and besides, he hates Hamlet-but it's too late to back out. He's rented a palatial apartment in Manhattan, and discovers to his shock that it's haunted by the ghost of the former owner-the legendary actor John Barrymore, the most famous "Hamlet" of the twentieth century. Will Barrymore's ghost help Andrew to reach new levels of artistic artistry in the greatest role ever written, or kill him trying?
