Dear Antioch School District 34 Family,

Happy October!

October is Bully Prevention Month across the nation.  As part of our district's Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) program we utilize the Stop, Walk, and Talk Technique.  Our goal is to give students the tools to reduce bullying behavior through the blending of school-wide positive behavior support, explicit instruction, and a redefinition of the bullying construct.

"Stop-Walk-Talk." Parents, if you hear your students using these words, they are following the bullying prevention program at Antioch School District 34! Stop-Walk-Talk teaches students how to respond if other students are bullying other Antioch students. Our staff have also been taught how to respond if students engage in bullying behavior, that is, behavior that is disrespectful and can even be unsafe.

Through "Stop-Walk-Talk" students are taught what bullying is and what it is not. For example, teasing, calling someone names, gossiping, excluding students from an activity, continuous pushing or constant poking are examples of bullying while accidentally bumping into someone or politely declining an invitation to play is not.

Throughout our schools you will see the Stop, Walk, and Talk posters.

Standards Based Report Card Frequently Asked Questions

     What are standards?

1.      Standards are what students should know and be able to do at the

end of each grade.  Each standard is not listed separately on the report card.
The report card is divided into domains that represent multiple
         standards.

2.      Why has Antioch District 34 gone to standards-based report cards for K-5th?

         The standards-based report card:
  • Helps teachers and students focus on end-of-year expectations from the very beginning of the year.
  • Aligns instruction, assessment, and grading with standards which are consistent, established criteria
  • Creates a higher level of consistency and continuity in assessing among teachers and across grade levels

3.      What standards are the district aligning to and why?

  • The standards the district is aligning to are the Common Core State Standards.
  • Today's students are preparing to enter a world in which colleges and businesses are demanding more than ever before. To ensure all students are ready for success after high school, the Common Core State Standards establish clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should know and be able to do in math and English language arts from kindergarten through 12th grade. The Common Core focuses on developing the critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills students will need to be successful. The new standards also provide a way for teachers to measure student progress throughout the school year and ensure that students are on the pathway to success in their academic careers.

4.      Are standards-based report cards completely new to Antioch District 34?

  • Standards-based report cards are not new to our district.  The Kindergarten-2nd grades have been using a standards-based report cards for many years.  Some of the actual standards are new/updated for these grades, though.  What is new is a standards-based report card for grades 3-5.

5.      What is the difference between the traditional assessment and

 standards-based assessment?

Traditional Grading
Standards-based Grading
Based on percentages
Based on learning goals and performance standards
Uses an uncertain mix of assessments, achievement tests, effort, homework, classwork, and behavior.
Evaluates learning behaviors from  achievement separately
Criteria of success may be unclear
Criteria of success is clear - the standards
Evaluates an ongoing accumulation of learning and averages the information
Evaluates most recent evidence of learning
Extrinsic motivation which focuses on the reward or punishment rather than the desired behavior
Maximizes intrinsic motivation for learning, which is a lasting and motivating force, and minimizes extrinsic motivation
Norm-referenced - comparison of students
Criterion referenced - based on students' own achievement of the standards
Competitive - encourages comparison against others
Noncompetitive - encourages self-assessment
