West Maple Road Re-Striping to Begin October 3
The re-striping of West
Maple Road from just east of Cranbrook to Southfield Road is scheduled to begin
Saturday, October 3.
Work crews will r
e-stripe the lanes
from the current four lane configuration to a three lane configuration. This trial project is the result of an extension study as part of the City's Multi-Modal Transportation planning efforts to improve City roads.
In order to test the expected improvements from a four to three lane conversion, this trial is being conducted now and continuing into next summer. Pre-conversion data will be compared to post-conversion data in order to evaluate the effect of the change. The data evaluated will include five key areas: average speeds, traffic volumes, cut-through traffic, travel time comparisons and accident data.

South Hamilton Alley Improvements
South Hamilton Alley is currently being rehabilitated and upgraded in accordance with the City's alley and passageway plan: "Activating Urban Space: A Strategy for Alleys and Passageways." The overarching purpose of the plan has been to "create high quality urban spaces that encourage active use and engagement to enhance public life in Birmingham." Willits Alley is a completed example of alley improvement.
Planned work on Hamilton Alley includes new combined sewer and drains, new concrete pavement with sections of exposed aggregate, dumpster screens, and custom wayfinding signs to assist pedestrians accessing the area.
The project began on September 8 and will take about 4 weeks to construct. To provide space for the work to occur,
ALL traffic has been kept out of the alley during the time construction is underway. A cooperative attitude between the City and the various business owners and residents has helped
make certain that routines are not disrupted any more than necessary.

Birmingham In Stitches Going Strong

The community-based public art installation event promotes existing public art programs, such as the CityScapes program, and engages the broader community in public art.
