Illuminated Capitals

Miss Sorensen's students are busy designing illuminated capital letters, creating a manuscript for Prince Caspian , and looking at medieval manuscripts (such as the Book of Kells) for inspiration. Illuminated capitals and manuscripts are some of the most beautiful works of art preserved from the early Middle Ages and revered more for their beauty than the content of their texts. One of the most poignant examples is the Book of Kells written around 800 BC with its ornate and intricate lettering and illustrations of the four Gospels written in Latin.

LATIN LINGO
Miss Sorensen reports that Latin class has taken a violent turn with the introduction of new vocabulary words such as
pugno (to fight),
oppugno (to attack), and
neco (to kill).  All of her classes are learning to recite the first part of
The Aeneid, Virgil's epic poem about Aeneas and his fellow Trojans fleeing their home of Troy which had been destroyed by the Greeks. They sail for Italy where Aeneas would found the future ruling dynasty of Rome. Ask your children to recite the first few lines of the poem:

Arma virumque cano, Troiae qui primus ab oris Italiam, fato profugus, Laviniaque venit litora, multum ille et terris iactatus et alto vi superum saevae memorem Iunonis ob iram....

I sing of arms and the man, he who, exiled by fate, first came from the coast of Troy to Italy, and to Lavinian shores - hurled about endlessly by land and sea, by the will  of the gods, by cruel Juno's remorseless anger....

Welcome to Veritas Classical Academy! Our mission is to develop the academic potential and personal character of each student through an academically rich educational experience.

Physical Education
Our "phys ed" curriculum at Veritas engages students in more than physical activity. Our goal is to expose students to a variety of sports, teach them about the history of sport and athletics, introduce them to good role models in the arena of sport, and convey the importance of physical health.

Over the last three weeks our 3rd and 4th graders have been learning the fundamentals of tennis.  This week, our 5th-8th grade students began their tennis segment for gym class.  For the next several weeks they will learn about the history of the sport and notable players, as well as the rules, score keeping, and skills.

The tennis segment is led by local tennis instructor, Susan Piatt. The students take a jog up the hill to the tennis courts for their weekly practice. Once there, Ms. Piatt runs them through a series of drills and practice sets. We already have a budding tennis phenom among our students (Miss Discini), whom Mr. Rutherford aspires to successfully challenge on the court one of these days!

Throughout the year, the students will also learn about soccer, golf, and basketball.  And of course, they all look forward to the Veritas Olympics again this year!
Composer of the Month: Frédéric Chopin
It is impossible to capture the depth and importance of Frédéric Chopin's work in just a few paragraphs. Born in 1810 near Warsaw, the Polish French composer and pianist of the Romantic period is best known for his piano solos and piano concerti.  He ranks as one of the world's greatest musical poets due to his sonoric creativity and meticulous craftsmanship.

Chopin was introduced to the piano by his mother and eldest sister, and as early as age six he began composing and entertaining at private gatherings.  After completing his musical studies in Warsaw, he proposed to pursue further education in Germany and Italy, but his travels were diverted to Paris when news of the Polish revolt against the Russians broke. Finding himself in the cultural center of Europe he made the acquaintance of a new generation of composers including Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz, Vincenzo Bellini, and Felix Mendelssohn.  There, in Paris, Chopin's talent for composition was given free reign.  His delicacy at the piano and intricate fingering were not to everyone's liking in large concert venues, but he quickly became a favorite recitalist of the great families of high society and a prominent teacher.

Suffering from recurring health problems that accelerated his death at age 39, Chopin's body of work is not extensive, but he is regarded as the first among the immortals of the Romantic period.

A Walk Through the Woods
Last week Mr. Dschida took an expedition of 5th and 6th grade students on a nature walk behind the Career Center to further their biology skills in classifying trees and leaves.  They have been studying dichotomous keys and classifications (kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species).
Reading Time with Our Neighbors

This week our 1st and 2nd grade students took a walk to a nearby rehabilitation center and nursing home to read to the residents.  They shared some of their favorite books with them, and already they are eager to do it again. What a wonderful way to share our love of reading with our neighbors, teach students about serving others, and make the resdents' day a little brighter.

Thank you again for your interest in our school.  Please contact us if you have any questions or would like to schedule a tour.

Sincerely,
Ben Rutherford, Headmaster
