For starters, I want to announce a date and location change to the Second Chance Society Town Hall I am co-hosting with Senator Coleman and the Upper Albany NRZ. The event has been moved to the Artists Collective located at 1200 Albany Avenue and will now take place on Wednesday, October 21st from 5:30 - 7:00 PM. I hope to see you there.

Asylum Hill Then and Now

Sigourney Square Park is a piece of the original design of the Asylum Hill neighborhood when it was first laid out in 1895. It has been and continues to be a critical piece of the social network of the neighborhood. This photo looks over the park to Ashley Street, note the trolley car.

2015
The park recently went through a complete redesign and renovation in 2013 and celebrated a grand re-opening in June of that year.

Exploring Asylum Hill:
AHCC Thrift Shop
For anyone driving down Asylum Ave it would be difficult to miss the magnificent brownstone church at Huntington St with it's stately steeple and clock, but you could be forgiven if you didn't notice the little white sign with the red border at the driveway that's only there for a few hours Friday morning.

Volunteer of the Month: Green Apple Day Volunteers

was Green Apple Day around the Nation and the World, and Hartford was no exception. For the fifth straight year, the Academy of Engineering and Green Technology led the way in this celebration of Service.

Cap and Gown for Farmington Avenue
On September 21st thirty-one civic, community and institutional leaders gathered to discuss the creation of a comprehensive community action plan for the Farmington Avenue Corridor with bookends of Sigourney and Woodland Streets. In its truest sense, just as with any commencement, this represents a beginning filled with promise.

Envision Fest '15
While Envisionfest was strictly speaking a Downtown Event and not in Asylum Hill, it's worth mentioning here if only because 1. it was such a beautiful day; 2. it was an easy walk down the hill and we've been advocating for years to be more connected to downtown; 3. we had lots of AH representation, including the Fresh Start Pallet Furniture, Frank Hagaman at the Envisionfest table taking photos of people in the frame and the Open Studio table to name just a few; 4. The Wadsworth Atheneum Grand Re-Opening of the Great Hall (Sue Carey).

PARK(ing) Day Hartford
Following a tradition that began in San Francisco 10 years ago, Hartford organizers including Hartford BID, Knox Inc., Greater Hartford Arts Council and Charter Oak Cultural Center among others have joined with more than 1000 other cities around the world to convert parking spaces on downtown streets into small short term Parks complete with grass (sod), benches sometimes, art and whatever else makes the statement that cities need more green public space and less parking for single user cars.

Hartford Blooms Foliage Tours
As a first for Hartford, this fall, October 13th and 17th, Hartford Blooms has arranged to provide tours on a
Double Decker Bus. The route will be throughout many of Hartford's Parks and beautiful streets stopping at many vistas to describe various historical and architectural treasures.

5th Annual Town Hall Meeting on Health Disparities
The Curtis D. Robinson Center for Health Equity will be holding a 'Town Hall' meeting on November 5th. The topic is "Unconscious Bias", what it is, how it impacts our health and what can be done about it.

Pet Blessing
On Saturday October 3rd at 1 P.M. there will be a blessing of animals in Sigourney Park sponsored by Trinity Episcopal Church in collaboration with Asylum Hill Baptist, Asylum Hill Congregational Church, Glory Chapel, Grace Lutheran Church, St. Joseph's Cathedral and Immanuel Congregational Church. Everyone (and their pets) is welcome. There will also be a blessing offered at both the 8 and 10 A.M. services on Sunday at Trinity Episcopal Church on Sigourney Street.

Committee Briefs
|
|
The Communications Committee met on September 14th and discussed this months News & Views content and agreed to add the new "Jobs Corner' feature which will be a few jobs that are open in the area that resident might qualify for and be interested in. These will also be posted on the website. It will be a joint effort involving Yvonne Matthews, Dean Amadon and Bernie Michel. Next meeting will be Oct 19th, 3:00 pm at CHE 140 Woodland St

Friends of Sigourney Square Park
The Friends of Sigourney Square Park met on September 14th
in the park once again. Discussed were items that those attending felt good about and suggestions for improvement. They appreciated all of the renovations and new equipment that has gotten extensive use especially this summer. Suggestions for improvement included an extra water fountain, more benches and tables especially near shade trees and more trash barrels. They all agreed to attend the next meeting to be held at 12:00 noon October 12th at the Center for Health Equity 140 Woodland St.

Quality of Life
The Quality of Life Committee met September 16th both at noon at the Center for Health Equity and at 5:30 at Veeder Place/NINA, 20 Sargeant Street where the Habitat plans for 161-181 S. Marshall St were presented. The Drawings show two two-family homes that will consist of four individual homeowners with zero plot line properties. Those present voted to recommend the design to the board for approval.
The evening meeting focused on public safety issues on Farmington Ave especially dealing with panhandling. The suggestion was made to have the monthly Quality of Life Committee report consist of brief reports on all of the individual committee efforts that fall under the Quality of Life umbrella. Next meetings will be on Oct 21st at noon & 5:30 at 140 Woodland and 20- 28 Sargeant St respectively.

Welcoming Committee
The Welcoming Committee met September 24th and discussed continuing the effort to find product outlets for the immigrant artisans that were very successful during the June-July Arts Event. Other suggestions included a Fall potluck dinner as a way to get to know one another better and a group trip on CTFastrak to become more familiar with this new mode of travel. Also there was an update on the Multicultural Center Committees progress.
