From the Executive Director

I am so excited to be reaching out to you as the new Executive Director of Healthy Waltham! A little bit about me: I have lived in Waltham for almost a decade and I have two wonderful children in the Waltham schools. I spent the last 20 plus years helping people to get active and appreciate the outdoors. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work in the community I call home. I am truly inspired by the impact of Healthy Waltham, from addressing food access issues, to providing healthy cooking classes to low income families and senior citizens, to coordinating school and community gardens. There are many more great things to come and I hope you will join me in the effort to make Waltham a healthier place to live, work and play.

700 Followers on Twitter
This month we reached 700 Twitter followers! Thank you to Courtney O'Malley who became our 700th follower. Waltham has a very active social media presence and it is great to be a part of it. You can find us on Twitter here.
NEW! Button Battery Program
Help get mercury-containing button batteries out of the trash and disposed of properly! Healthy Waltham is partnering with the City of Waltham Recycling Department on a new recycling program. Save your button batteries (found in hearing aids, cell phones, watches, car keys, and other small electronic devices) and bring them to the Waltham Recycling Department located at 165 Lexington St. Healthy Waltham will receive a donation from Wheelabrator, Waltham's waste management service, for all the button batteries collected now through the end of November. Then, we will be collecting button batteries in 2016 via collection boxes around town, check our website next month for the locations. Thank you for supporting recycling and Healthy Waltham! Please note: we're collecting button type batteries ONLY.
Eat Right and Keep Fit for Seniors
A group of about 20 seniors participated in our new cooking and walking program held at  Waltham Fields Community Farm on a brisk fall day. Chef Reva worked with participants to create three tasty dishes using farm-fresh, local veggies for all to try. The group enjoyed preparing healthy dishes and touring the fields with the Farm's Alex Lennon-Simon. Photos from the program can be found here. Check our website for these yummy recipes: carrot and bean spread; basil, feta and tofu pesto; and light leek and potato soup with collards.

Study Aims to Get People 50 Plus Walking!
If you would like to get more active by walking but have trouble getting started, this study is for you! A Brandeis professor is looking for older adults who would like to participate in a 12 week study using a Fitbit to track steps. Participants are being recruited now through February. Please click here for the flyer and encourage someone you know (or yourself) to get more active!

NEW! "Hannaford Helps" Bags to Benefit Healthy Waltham
Help the environment and Healthy Waltham at the same time! Hannaford supermarket will donate $1 to Healthy Waltham for every reusable "Hannaford Helps" bag purchased through December 31 at the Waltham store located at 55 Russell St. Reusable bags can cut down on plastic bag waste and support a great cause! Look for the eye-catching bright blue bags at the store. Thanks, Hannaford, for choosing Healthy Waltham as the beneficiary of this brand new program.
M icrowave Cooking Workshops
Residents of the Home Suites transitional housing are enjoying Healthy Waltham's monthly healthy cooking classes. All the dishes prepared are made using just a microwave or are no-cook. We had a lot of fun at the first class on October 27 making a pumpkin pie pudding and a banana in a blanket with healthy nut-butters. We have microwave recipes on our website here. A great resource for healthy cooking without a kitchen or with just a microwave can be found on the Jewish Family & Children's Service (JF&CS) website here.
