A Special Day
120 Volunteers Help Transform the Arboretum
The Arboretum is incredibly grateful to the 120 volunteers that came here for United Way of King County's annual
Day of Caring event on Friday, September 18. This year's volunteers were from ZymoGenetics, Nordstrom, and Microsoft, and by the end of the day, they had completed six major maintenance projects in the Arboretum.

Perennials Aplenty
Donations Nursery Bursting with Beautiful Plants
Thanks to generous gifts from a local grower and a local plant society,
Plant Donations Nursery is fully stocked with lovely perennials - just in time for our last Saturday sale day of the year, on October 10! You'll find hardy fuchsias still in bloom, pretty pansies, a mix of ferns, wall flowers of varying colors, lavender, 'Tuscan Blue' rosemary, Siberian irises in various shades of blue, and much more. The nursery will close for the season at the end of October.

Local Cafe to Donate Profits to the Arboretum
Every fiscal "trimester," the Queen Bee Cafe in Madison Park, Seattle, generously donates its net profits (i.e. profit minus expenses) to a local charity. From now through December, the cafe will donate its profits to the Arboretum Foundation. Stop in soon and try some of Queen Bee's yummy sweets and savories - and help support the Arboretum!

A Tough Tree with Stunning Bark and Fall Foliage
The Persian ironwood or irontree, Parrotia persica, is rarely seen in Northwest gardens, and yet it combines a number of very desirable traits, including adaptability and a fabulous fall foliage display. In that latest issue of the Washington Park Arboretum Bulletin, director emeritus of the Arboretum John Wott writes about this beautiful plant from the forest regions south of the Caspian Sea and reviews the history of the specimens in the Arboretum. See maple trees ablaze with fall foliage at the Seattle Japanese Garden's annual Momijigari, or
Maple Viewing Festival, on Sunday, October 11, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Enjoy taiko drumming, a samurai sword demonstration, art workshops, a kids scavenger hunt, and guided tours of the garden.

Jack Robins
Remembering a Dear Friend of the Arboretum
The Foundation would like to acknowledge the passing of a dear friend of the Arboretum, Jack Robins. He died peacefully on Thursday, September 10, at the age of 95. A member of the Arboretum Foundation since 1970, Jack served on our Board of Directors for eight years (1995 to 2003) and played an influential role in the development of the 2001 Arboretum Master Plan. He was also a founding member of Arboretum Unit 52, the "couples unit." Read more.

HPSW Bulb Sale
Center for Urban Horticulture, Sunday, October 11, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Our friends at the Hardy Plant Society of Washington (HPSW) will host their 5th annual Fall Bulb Sale at the Center for Urban Horticulture on October 11. It will feature a huge selection of spring-flowering bulbs, including tulips, narcissus, alliums, crocuses, snowdrops, and fritillarias (the little ones).
