November 20, 2015 Emmanuel's E-News
Greetings from
Emmanuel Episcopal Church!

This Sunday is the last Sunday after Pentecost: The Feast of Christ the King.

Fr. Scott Barron will celebrate and preach.

We look forward to seeing you in church!

November 22 is the Last Sunday after Pentecost: the Feast of Christ the King

Christ the King Sunday is celebrated on the last Sunday of Ordinary time (last Sunday after Pentecost), before the beginning of Advent that starts the new Church Year. As the last Sunday of the Christian Church Year, Christ the King Sunday is the climax and conclusion of the Church's liturgical journey through the life of Christ and the Gospel message. Its purpose is to celebrate the coming reign of Christ as King of the Earth and his completion of the renewed creation that marks the fullness of the Kingdom of God. That hope is born from the entire life of Christ and his teachings that have been celebrated in the seasons of the Church Year during the past twelve months.

In celebrating the Reign of Christ the King, this Sunday also provides an appropriate bridge to the new Church Year that begins the following Sunday on the first Sunday of Advent with an emphasis on hope and expectation, the longing for the coming of the Kingdom of God amid the darkness of a sinful world.

Welcome Scott Barron!

We are happy to welcome Fr. Scott Barron back to Emmanuel this Sunday. The Rev. Scott Barron is an Episcopal priest and serves as Chaplain at RML Specialty Hospital in Hinsdale.
Stewardship is a way of thanking God for all the blessings God has given us by returning to God a portion of our time, talent, and treasure.
What matters to Jesus is not the size of the gift but the difference it makes in the life of the giver, because they are giving from their heart. Just like John was giving and was changed, we also can give from our heart because giving is part of our spiritual responsibility. We give because we like what the church is doing. We see our church live out as a witness of Christ in the world through our outreach programs and we respond generously. We want to contribute to the good work that the church does.
We give because of what it affords us from the programs we have for our children, a place to belong, and a program we enjoy. We give because of what the church gives us back in return and we know that contributing keeps the church open for us and others. We know sharing supports the church and that our church works on building the Kingdom of God.
We give because of the theological understanding of stewardship. God has given generously to us and we must give generously back to God. We do not need to give up our riches literally but we are to give of ourselves and our resources to God as part of our faithfulness. In giving back to God we share our resources with others so that they might benefit: the other among us who might not normally benefit.
We can be the electricity, which flows through us with God's generosity and then be Emmanuel's Beacon of Light to all who are seeking God in the world.
Thanks so much to those who have already turned in their pledge cards.  Cards may still be placed in the collection plate on Sunday, sent in to the office, or given to a member of the vestry.
Didn't receive a pledge card?  You can download one HERE.

Children's Choir Day

Sunday is Children's Choir Day: they will be singing throughout the 9am service

Christmas Choir

Christmas Cheer If you love to sing but you don't have the time to commit to joining the choir, consider singing with the Emmanuel Choir on Christmas Eve. The time commitment is only one hour a week during the month of December.

That's right! From 8 to 9 pm each Wednesday evening in December the Choir will be preparing for our Christmas Eve 11pm liturgy. We will be joined by LT and college students in our ensemble and choir. So bring your teens along as well.

There is no better way to celebrate Christmas than lending your voice and participating in our Christmas liturgy!

If you have any questions please email or call George at (312) 835-2526.
Community Outreach

Emmanuel and the Quinn Community Center

Together, We can give thanks and bring Thanksgiving to those who need it most.

As we begin to make our traditional holiday plans, cornucopia let us not forget those for whom the holidays are the hardest time of the year.  Continuing in our Emmanuel tradition of sharing and giving during the Thanksgiving season, we have again made our commitment to fill 25 Thanksgiving Baskets with all the makings of a complete holiday dinner.  We will be collecting the following items each Sunday:
  • 100 Canned Veggies (corn, green greens or mixed)100 Canned Fruit (sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, pineapple, oranges and cocktail)
  • 50 Canned Gravy
  • 50 Cans of Cranberry Sauce
  • 25 Gift Cards for entrée
  • 25 Frozen Pies or other Frozen Desserts
  • 25 Bags or 50 Boxes of Potatoes
  • 25 sets of Baskets, Napkins, Candles, etc.
  • 25 Bags of Rolls
  • 25 Large Baskets, totes, or other nice and reusable containers to fill.
  • Anything else that you feel would be a welcome addition to the baskets.

If you would prefer not to bring in food, please consider donating $40-$50 dollars to cover the cost of a complete dinner. Our Thanksgiving dinners are for an average family of 4-6 people - many of the families who receive are baskets are much larger - so there is never enough of any item. Gift cards are preferred for the cost of a turkey; however, frozen turkeys will be accepted as well.

We will be collecting food until THIS SUNDAY, November 22nd, when we will assemble the baskets after the service, for Service Sunday. We will need volunteers to help assemble the baskets, do any last minute shopping, and drive the baskets over the Quinn Center.

Please click HERE or on the cornucopia to sign up.

Questions:  Please email or call Jenn Vince at (312) 593-4470.

A Note from Pastor Susan

Let me introduce myself. I am a retired rostered ELCA (Lutheran) pastor who is licensed by the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago to serve in this area. I served, very briefly, at Emmanuel Episcopal in 2014. With the consent of the Diocese and the blessing of the vestry, I am now helping out part-time during this time of transition at Emmanuel.

My time at Emmanuel will be limited. It is hoped that an expedited call process will mean that I will be with you as a supply pastor for only a few months. My duties and responsibilities at Emmanuel are also limited. I will be the primary supply pastor at worship services (Wednesday Service of Healing and Sunday morning Eucharist), presiding and sharing preaching responsibilities with Deacon Bill. I will serve primarily on Wednesdays (full day) and Sunday mornings. I will meet with staff on Wednesdays and provide other services as requested and coordinated with the vestry through the wardens.

I am truly thankful that Deacon Bill will be leading the effort to revitalize and utilize a lay pastoral care team to make visitations and take the Holy Eucharist into members' homes. That will be a blessing that will multiply our care of one another in Christ's name. I am available when you particularly need a rector in an emergency or otherwise (e.g., home and hospital visits, funerals, conversation/pastoral counseling). Members may call me at home (630) 325-6983 for true emergencies. Contact me using email at [email protected]. This address will be checked at least on Wednesdays and Sundays.

It may be helpful to think of me as a steady supply pastor. I am not an interim, someone who serves in a full capacity as a rector. I am at Emmanuel to provide reliable clergy support and presence. Please call upon me as needed, but be aware that I am very part-time. I am happy to be at Emmanuel and truly look forward to getting to know you again.

Cleaning up with BEDS Plus

The BEDS laundry program here at Emmanuel Episcopal Church is in need of volunteers.

BEDS laundry is just one time a month. Laundry is picked up at Emmanuel Episcopal on Thursday or Friday and must be returned by the following Wednesday afternoon. Volunteers get two bags of laundry, which equals out to 2 or 3 loads depending on washer size. Laundry is washed, dried and folded. It is sheets only with a few towels mixed in.

We need two volunteers to start on November 27th and take this once a month through May 12th. If a high schooler volunteers, the student will earn 25/30 hours for the year commitment. Three volunteers graduated last year after serving for four years while at LT!

If you are interested please contact Kate on her cell at (708) 227-5502.

-------------------
BEDS still needs a few good people...

To volunteer for the remaining open shift for the emergency overnight shelter at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Wednesday evenings during the current shelter season.

BEDS Plus currently has an opening on the 4th Wednesday during the 3rd shift (3AM - 7:00AM).

Volunteers supervise sleeping shelter clients and help close down shelter in the morning. Volunteers receive on-the-job training from an experienced worker and have the support of staff when needed.

Consider assisting in this very important ministry of our church. Contact Devin Quinn at (708) 354- 0858 ext. 3 if you are interested.
