Christ Clinic Katy Offers Walk with a Doc Program BenTaub

Christ Clinic Katy is one of three clinics in the Greater Houston area offering the Walk with a Doc program. This international free walking program is designed to help patients lose weight and prevent chronic diseases by having physicians host the walks with the goal of educating, empowering and exercising with their patients.

Christ Clinic Katy hosts their walk sessions every 2nd Saturday of the month at Rick Rice Park in Katy, TX. For more details, click here to download their flyer.

The program started in April and they see 30-40 patients a month. Christ Clinic Katy has also partnered with local charities, such as Clothed by Faith, through which walking shoes are provided. For more information, visit www.christclinickaty.ort or contact their Volunteer Coordinator at 281-574-1540.
HLM Collaborative Meeting Highlights - Focus on Healthcare Sector HLMCollab

HLM had a really great 3rd Quarter meeting last month. We had a record attendance of 70 Collaborative members and friends of HLM!

The meeting primarily focused on the healthcare sector and what various local groups are doing to promote healthy eating and active living. During the meeting we heard presentations from Prevention Institute, Christ Clinic Katy, Houston Food Bank and the Texas Medical Center - Health Policy Institute on specific wellness initiatives they are working on.

Once the presentations were over, attendees formed groups and were asked to consider what work is already being done similar to these initiatives and ideas around policies that could be adopted more widely across the county.

As usual, the meeting ended with community updates, program updates and next steps. Click here to download a copy of the full meeting highlights.

Speakers included Richard Scott with City of Pasadena, Rep. Gilbert Peña, Tammie Nielsen with Harris County Precinct 2, Rocaille Roberts with Harris County Public Health & Environmental Services and Karen Taylor with Pasadena Independent School District

(L to R) Rep. Gilbert Peña, Jennifer Hadayia (HCPHES), Albert Cheng (HCPHES), Rocaille Roberts (HCPHES) and Dr. Umair Shah (HCPHES)

According to Jennifer Hadayia (HCPHES) "The ultimate goal is to create a healthy, sustainable, affordable, accessible and complete food system. It's making it possible for people to get access to healthy food. With access to healthy food comes a world of change. That world of change means that people can eat healthier life-long and avoid diet-related health concerns that have been a concern not only for Pasadena and Harris County but across the country."

Featured Resource: Parks and Trails Health Impact Assessment Toolkit FeaturedResource

Well-designed parks and trails are valued parts of our environment. Research examining the connection between parks, trails, and health has helped identify the value that parks provide to people. Parks and trails can promote physical activity and community engagement; they provide both environmental and mental health benefits.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed a toolkit that can assist in the development of Health Impact Assessments (HIAs) with park and trail components. It provides a framework for public health departments, city planners, project managers, and other stakeholders to work together.
