It's as easy as riding a bike. That's what one local education program wants kids to start thinking about studying [STEM]. The Greater Cincinnati STEM Collaborative has once again organized numerous bicycle clubs across the region for 7th and 8th graders to hone their skills through studying the mechanics that go into making a bike work. Walmart donated nearly 300 Avalon cruiser bicycles to this year's clubs, for students to study, disassemble and reassemble, according to GC Stem Collaborative spokeswoman and Project Manager Mary Adams.
Google is offering a free online class about deep learning
Techies who have some background in machine learning may want to tune into Google's new course on deep learning. Available through Udacity-home to a host of open online courses-the class is expected to run about three months, assuming people put in about six hours of work per week. The course will also introduce participants to TensorFlow, the open-source deep learning platform Google unveiled back in November. Deep learning, a division of machine learning through which machines detect and classify patterns in data, is the driving force behind Google Photos' search engine and the company's speech recognition technology.
Rowan engineering students encourage kids to Think Like A Girl
Gaby Rochino knew she wasn't the only Rowan University student struggling to get through a particularly difficult engineering class - "I'd study nine hours a night and I'd still get a C on a quiz" - but she still felt alone. "Imagine sitting in a classroom, and nobody in your classroom looks like you. Rowan itself is very un-diverse, so mostly everyone around me was a Caucasian male," said Rochino, 21, of Cherry Hill. "It's just devastating looking around the room, thinking, 'Maybe I'm not cut out for this, maybe I'm not made for this, maybe girls can't do engineering,' " she said.
