Dearest Friends and Supporters of CDE,

Happy New Year! With the Holidays past, the New Year rolled in and the month of January vanished, we're feeling more energize d than ever! At CDE, we're  setting new goals and keeping track of old to continue to bring you our best season (so far)!  Here's how we're doing on stage and in the classroom to create
Performance With A Purpose:

Our 15th season, dedicat ed to the woman's voice, continues with performances around the corner. Bindis and Bruises and Encuentros opens March 4, meaning only 6-short weeks away! Under the co-direction of Ellyzabeth Adler and Priya Narayan, the Bindis and Bruises casts works tirelessly to tell the stories of survivors from dating, domestic and sexual violence.  Dr. Sita, played by Narayan, guides the survivors away from their shame and silence towards an empowered future. Through dance and theatre, we find strength, hope and an unified voice. In describing the bindi, Narayan defines her relationship with it, stating:

"Shakti, one of the names of the Goddess, represents feminine energy and strength. Wearing a bindi is to recognize my own strength... I look at the Goddess and I place the bindi with the vermillion powder in between my eyebrows. I gather my inner strength and connect with her as She helps me find that strength to be the best woman I can be."

On March 18 and 19,  we will be hosting a special Bindis and Bruises only weekend. Spoken word artist and activist, Nikki Patin presents Survivor the Mic, a showcase of spoken word by dating, domestic and dating violence survivors. A post-show panel discussion will also take place after both shows. The panel will include Nikki Patin, Ellyzabeth Adler, Priya Narayan, Caleb Probst and Susan Imus.

On the same program (March 4-12) , Encuentros, devised by Silvita Diaz-Brown and Sildance/ AcroDanza.  Encuentros developed over the course two years through research, experimentation, training, collaboration with the dancers and in progress presentations. Sildance/AcroDanza are very excited to share the final work.  Encuentros integrates dance, partner acrobatics, sound and text to represent the political journey of a couple. This triptych explores the stages of relationships through infatuations, imperfection and self-actualization. Diaz-Brown and Lani Montreal, dramaturge

for Encuentros, were inspired by the work of sociologist, Eric Fromm, to better understand Diaz-Brown's curiosities of how loving relationships can act as seeds to healthy societies. In his book, The Art of Loving , Fromm states, "In love, the paradox occurs that two beings become one and yet remain two. Unless we accomplish this within the relationship, we are lost to each other." A segment of Encuentros originally presented in March 2015 at our Full Circle Festival. "Love is an art form requiring practice," says Diaz-Brown.

In one night, two completely different styles of works share the space to shed light on similar issues. One voice, one story, one person at a time. Their stories are our stories. Come take part in the conversations!
