Hemlock Trail Update hemlock

There was an update on the Towpath Connector, the Hemlock Trail in the February issue of Independence Today magazine.

The 1.85-mile Hemlock Trail will begin at the intersection of Brecksville Road and Selig Drive, and end on Stone Road, at the connection with the Towpath Trail on Canal Road, in Valley View

Construction set for 2017

Years in the planning, the construction of Hemlock Trail will finally be underway in 2017, thanks to a $500,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Clean Ohio Trails fund. The city will have to raise the remaining funds needed to complete the trail.

Clean Water and Green Infrastructure Cleanwater

Our friends at  Sustainable Cleveland  produced this video to celebrate clean water, and to better connect people to their water resources to help restore, conserve and protect this valuable asset.

This video illustrates how NEORSD, Cleveland Metroparks, Cuyahoga River Restoration, Holden Arboretum and Western Reserve Land Conservancy are all leading the way in green infrastructure. These examples show how green infrastructure can build community, beautify our neighborhoods, and clean our water.

Stage 3 of the Towpath Trail will feature green infrastructure elements including three wetlands and  bioswales, which will remove stormwater from the combined sewer system, treat stormwater drainage and reduce run off pollution to the Cuyahoga River.

Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area Funding Extended extended

When the Ohio & Erie Canalway was officially established as a National Heritage Area by Congress in 1996 it was given a funding cap of $10 million and a sunset date of 2012. No more than $1 million could be granted in any eligible year. This funding was also contingent on the Ohio & Erie Canalway meeting two major requirements: creating a Management Plan within three years, and maintaining a $1:$1 ratio of local match funding for every federal dollar granted and expended. The Ohio & Erie Canalway has met these requirements. The authorizing legislation has been amended to expand the funding cap to $15 million, while the sunset date has been extended to 2021.

In the 2016 Omnibus Appropriations bill, the authorizing legislation for the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area received a further funding cap extension to $17 million. The funding cap extension allow the Ohio & Erie Canalway to seek annual appropriations for federal funding to continue the work of developing the National Heritage Area by preserving, connecting and interpreting its natural, historic and cultural resources.

Thanks to Congresswoman Marcia Fudge, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, Congressman Bob Gibbs, Congressman Jim Renacci, Congressman Tim Ryan, for their support of the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage. Special thanks to Congressman David Joyce and Senator Sherrod Brown and Senator Rob Portman for their great leadership and dedication regarding the Funding extension legislation.

Canalway Partners works to develop the Ohio & Erie Canalway in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County; while the  Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition focuses on Summit, Stark and Tuscarawas Counties.
