Ash Wednesday Services
February 10

Ash Wednesday of 1995 was a dark time for our music director Stephan Casurella. "I had recently made some major life decisions, and they all seemed to have gone wrong," says Stephan. But it is not the darkness he recalls that day as he gathered with others for the Ash Wedneday liturgy. Instead, it is the promise of God in the face of darkness that he remembers most.

As the priest explained, "the decaying, nutrient-rich insect carcasses (from the plague the year prior) become the very substance in which an unusually abundant harvest grows."

"As I walked home ... The darkness wasn't gone, but I had hope that somehow God would transform it into grace."   Read Stephan's reflection in its entirety.

Come and begin the journey with us as we move through the deepest meaning of what it means to be Christian. Incense, a tradition that dates back to the Hebrews and is associated with the prayers of the faithful rising to the heavens, will be used at the 6:00 pm service.

Service Times
7:30 am, Centennial Chapel
12:10 & 6:00 pm, Cathedral Nave

This will be the beginning of a once-a-month formation class that will follow the 10:00 am Sunday morning service. Join us as we try to answer difficult questions, explore the foundations of the Episcopal tradition, and share a meal. (If you're interested in confirmation or baptism, this is a required class.) We will meet from 11:45 am-1:30 pm in the Youth Room on the 3rd floor. Questions? Email Dan Carlson for more information

Adult Forum This Sunday
January 31

Combining personal story telling, Biblical narrative, dictionary definitions, U.S. Census records, and linguistic and historical research, cathedral member Merelyn Bates-Mims makes the case for equating race with absurdity, both in use and legal construct. The presentation, entitled "Defining Race," traces the changes made to the racial labeling of one member of her family across multiple census enumerations, liking the labelings to Mark Twain's Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson. It also encompasses the sharing of her experiences as a Fulbright conducting linguistic research in four African countries: Cameroon; Ivory Coast; Sierra Leone; and Senegal. Join us at 11:30 am in the forum room on Sunday, January 31, for this wonderful offering.

Family Sunday
February 7

As there will be no catechesis on Sunday, February 7 , we encourage you to participate in Family Sunday at  the 10:00 am service. Family Sundays are simply opportunities for families to sit together during worship. Doing so can help families connect without all of the distractions that families some time face during the work week. Sitting together also can help families grow in their faith along side one another, and provide an opportunity to talk about what they learned or experienced in worship. Family Sundays will continue quarterly every year, and we invite you all to participate!

On Sunday, February 7 , please join us for our "Shrove Sunday" Jazz Mass at the 10:00 am, featuring Nidaros Jazz Mass during the service, and the anthems Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit and I Want Jesus to Walk with Me . This is a beautiful service and we welcome all to attend!
Jazz Mass will be followed by a pancake breakfast in the undercroft. See you then!

Shifrah Special Offering
February 7

Join Irish writer Gareth Higgins, founder of the community "Making Peace Through Story and Image", for an evening of beautiful community, extraordinary cinema, and life-enhancing conversation on Sunday, February 7 , at 5:00 pm. Gareth will share stories of growing up in Northern Ireland amidst violent conflict, share his journey into peacemaking, and explore how the stories we tell can make our lives richer or poorer, safer or more dangerous, more whole or more broken. We'll screen a rarely-shown movie as a way into the conversation and have the opportunity to imagine what making peace in Ireland might teach us about how to reduce violence - and heal ourselves - wherever we are. Everyone's welcome! Check here for all Shifrah offerings.

Bicentennial Buzz
February 14

Our Bicentennial celebration is coming up quickly, but there are still 2 weeks left to sign up for a Bicentennial event working group that is of interest to you! In order for any Bicentennial event to occur, there must be a working group of three or more cathedral members willing and able to devote their time and talent to its planning and execution. (A member of the Bicentennial Committee will be linked to each working group as well.) Please check the cathedral website here  and take some time to review the possible events that have been put forward, and sign up to help make it happen! For more information, contact Suzann Parker Leist or Chuck Harris, co-chairs of the Bicentennial Committee.
Host Families Needed
February 27

On Saturday, February 27 , the Concordia College Choir will be coming to perform a concert here at Christ Church. Many of you may remember that the choir shared an amazing concert here several years ago to
a capacity audience, and we are so privileged to have this
renowned group here with us once again!

The choir is a large one, and we are in need of approximately 40 host households who would be willing to shelter 2-4 singers overnight following the performance on the 27th. Hosts
would also need to provide breakfast, as well as transportation to the cathedral the next morning. If you are able to host or have questions, please contact Dawn Bruestle. Thank you!

Concordia Choir
February 27

Experience the 72-voice Concordia Choir of Moorhead, Minnesota, under the direction of René Clausen, during its return to Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday, February 27, at 7:00 pm. Performances with the Grammy Award-winning King's Singers and on Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion radio show highlight the choir's world-class quality. An eclectic program of traditional  and contemporary choral works! There is no admission charge for this event. For more information, visit http:// cincinnaticathedral.com or call 513-621-1817.

We also still need host families for this offering! Please see above.

Baptism Class
March 19

Our Book of Common Prayer teaches us that the sacrament of Baptism " ... is (the) full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ's body, the Church." Baptism publicly proclaims something that is already true, that we are loved and claimed as God's own, that we are part of a larger family than the one into which we were born.

The cathedral will hold a class on Saturday, March 19,  from 9:00 to 11:30 am for those interested in being baptized in the coming year.
If that is you, or if you wish to have your child baptized, please click here for more information.
Submissions Deadline

The deadline for content submissions for your Weekly GPS is each Wednesday at noon. Please email copy -- including the name/date/ time of your program offering, as well as a contact name and their information to Sarah Hartwig.
