Gardant Communities Glow with Shining Stars
In December, Gardant honored Shining Stars from our assisted living, memory care and senior living communities. These individuals are star employees who work tirelessly to improve the quality of life for residents, putting them first and embracing our company values of Love, Compassion and Dignity. The top 2015 Shining Stars were from Prairie Living at Chautauqua, John Evans Supportive Living and Cambridge House of Maryville.

Ageism, Attitude and Your Health
In a story posted on the
U.S. News and World Report HEALTH website, patient advice reporter Lisa Esposito says that buying into old-age put-downs is bad for you and explains why.

Combating Ageism
A recent Blog highlights some of the many ways that the volunteer efforts of residents and staff members at Gardant communities help enhance the lives of others. Their efforts help dispel the idea professed by some that older adults are useless and nothing but a burden on society.

Vitamin D and the Risk of Falling
Rather than improving the function of lower extremities, higher doses of Vitamin D may actually increase the risk of falling, notes a story posted on Jan. 4 on the  Medical News Today website. The story cites research published online by  JAMA Internal Medicine .

Video Games and Memory Loss
Another story posted on the
Medical News Today website cites  research that indicates that playing 3D Video Games may help us maintain cognitive function as we age. The research conducted at the University of California Irvine suggests that 3D Video Games can help boost memory and may help people with dementia and other health conditions associated with memory loss.

Yoga and Bone Health
In a story posted in December on The New York Times Well website, Jane E. Brody indicates that the benefits of yoga likely go bone-deep in addition to improving range of motion, strength and coordination and reducing the risk of anxiety.

Minimizing Medicare Costs
If you are looking at ways to keep your Medicare out-of-pocket expenses to a minimum, Maryalene LaPonsie suggests in a story posted on the U.S. News and World Report MONEY website that you getting five screenings. The screenings, which are free, can potentially prevent small issues from becoming big problems.

Seniors and the Cold of Winter
Seniors are among those especially vulnerable to such cold weather hazards as hypothermia (cold body temperature). In addition, some medications and some health conditions such as arthritis and Parkinson's disease can make it more difficult to stay warm. The National Institute on Health has information available on its website about hypothermia, including what you can do to keep a normal body temperature, what are the signs of hypothermia, and what you should do if someone has the signs of hypothermia.

Also, a Winter Weather Preparedness Guide is available on the Illinois Emergency Management Agency's website. Seniors can also visit Gardant communities to warm up during winter weather emergencies. To find a Gardant community near you, visit our website
