NEWS FROM THE HERRESHOFF MARINE MUSEUM
Herreshoff Classic Regatta Recap

A spectacular collection of classic sailboats treated onlookers during the Herreshoff Classic Regatta in August. The event hosted numerous classic boats, many of which were built here in Bristol over 100 years ago. Racing together were three New York 30s, built by Herreshoff in 1905.  Our waters were host to a number of smaller sailboats as well. Five Herreshoff 12½s raced together, a number of them crewed by young sailors. Following the races, competitors and spectators gathered on the Museum's waterfront for a lobster bake catered by McGrath's Clambake with support from the Herreshoff Family. Our sincere appreciation goes out to the event sponsors Torresella Wines and Colonial Knife Corp

Summer Sailing Recap, Fall Sailing Lessons & Rentals

Both the youth and adult sailing programs finished strong and proved to be a huge success this summer. With 15 instructors on staff, we were able to teach over 200 kids and 40 adults this summer! Our rental program also proved to be a welcome addition with 9 participants and continued interest in the opportunities to get out on Narragansett Bay in historic 12½s.

This fall we are still taking advantage of the warm weather and consistent breezes with our youth after school program and adult lessons and rentals. The boats will stay in the water until the end of September, so if you haven't had the chance to sail with us, there is still time!

If you have an idea for a paper we encourage you to discuss it with us now. We are ready to help develop your ideas and construct your abstract. Contact John Palmieri at

Herreshoff Steam
New Blog: Herreshoff Steam

Did you know, until 1890 the output of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. was almost exclusively steam driven craft? We want to share with you the wonders of HMCo's steam engine technology. This new blog is intended to build interest and contributions to construct a dynamic exhibit of this Era of Steam. Our focus will be on the six steam engines and one boiler that are in our collection, and any archival material that can tell the story of invention and innovation which was a hallmark of the Herreshoff brothers.

Resolute
Part Sixteen- The 13th Challenge:  Forming the Defender Syndicates in 1913

The three contenders to defend the Cup first meet on the 2nd of June 1914 They include the George Owens designed, Bath Iron Works built DEFIANCE; the Nat Herreshoff designed, Herreshoff built RESOLUTE; and the William Gardner designed, Lawley-built VANITIE. Had we been able to confidentially interview the three syndicate managers they all would have told us the same story; if they had their way, they would be racing in a Nat Herreshoff designed and Herreshoff built boat. If that was the objective of each syndicate how did things develop as they did?  Read More...
