President's Report

Greetings AFP members!

Celebrating National Philanthropy Day is always my favourite event of the year because it reminds me of the incredible generous and loving people in our community who care so deeply for the causes that matter to them and connect to their hearts. We were witness to the full spectrum of philanthropy last night, and with the youth categories always being a special highlight, it is clear that the future is in good hands, and the profession of fundraising has some potential recruits!

As you read this newsletter, I want you to take a minute to celebrate YOU, and know that I am celebrating you also. I know hard dedicated you are, how much you care about your charity, and that you sometimes carry the weight of responsibility to make sure the organization is able to thrive with the money you raise. I know that most of all, you care about your donors and are deeply committed to them and a positive philanthropic experience with you and your charity. You are doing important work. Honourable work. Challenging work.  I totally get it, and I support you completely in the journey of professional fundraising. Thank you for everything that you do, and for representing our profession with such grace and commitment. I am truly honoured to represent you and support you in any way that I can.

Read on to learn more about the NPD finalists and be sure to start thinking about your nominees for next year!

Gratefully,

Diane

AFP VI Scholarship Award Winners

Gillian Tidey - Winner of Chamberlain Scholarship and John Saunders Scholarship to offset costs of attending the AFP International Conference in Boston
Gillian Tidey is the Resource Development Associate with United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island (UWCNVI).  A yearlong rotary exchange to Brazil when Gillian was 16 sparked a love of travel which sent her around the world at a young age. Following her passion for travel Gillian completed her Bachelor in Tourism Management at Vancouver Island University in the spring of 2014. Shortly after, she accepted a position at UWCNVI as Resource Development Assistant. Seeing the change that she could help to make in people's lives, Gillian quickly developed a passion for fundraising and has since been promoted to a Development Associate in the organization. Gillian lives in Nanaimo and enjoys running and hiking with her husband and dogs. Her favourite part about working with United Way is visiting and volunteering with the variety of organizations that they fund.  Gillian has been a member of Association of Fundraising Professionals for over a year. She joined to gain access to professional development opportunities and to network with other professionals in the industry. Gillian has recently completed her AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising Certificate, and one day would like to complete her CFRE. One of her favourite benefits of being a member of AFP was participating in the peer mentorship program. She is excited to attend the 2016 AFP International Conference and share the learnings with our chapter.

Christopher Geater - $650 to attend the AFP Congress in Toronto
I fundraise because I like to say yes to people. I like to tell plumbers and accountants, students and retirees, doers and thinkers alike that yes, they can be an essential part of saving a life or healing a community. I love to tell people yes, they can have a bed or a sweater, a meal or a treatment, or a shoulder to cry on. I like to tell people in need that yes, there is someone out there who cares about them. There are thousands. I like to tell people yes, I'm proud of the small way I help make the world a better place, and you can be too.

Pam Prewett -$500 to attend the Nonprofit Storytelling Workshop in Seattle
As is typical in our business, I became a fundraiser by accident 14 years ago. My professional experience includes success in event management, sponsorship, media relations, marketing and direct mail. Having worked mostly in the health and social services sectors, I am currently working in the arts and culture sector as Manager of Development at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Since I enjoy meeting and learning about people the role of fundraiser suits me well and I've never looked back! In my spare time I've embraced the role of chauffeur to my two teenage children.

Liz Ausio - $222.20 to attend the AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising Course
Liz joined the University of Victoria Fundraising Team in 2014. Being new to the Fundraising world, the opportunity to attend the AFP Fundamentals Fundraising Course was extremely instrumental in assisting her build the basic core skills and tools necessary to succeed in the fundraising world. She looks forward to seeing what opportunities the next couple years have instore for her in the fundraising community.

Zuzanna Szkudlarek - Scholarship to attend the CFRE review Course
Zuzanna loves supporting frontline fundraisers at UVic in her role as Senior Research Officer. Before that she was on the ground working with alumni annual giving donors where her favorite part was listening to alumni and donors share their passion for UVic and higher education. Zuzanna has been a part of many grassroots fundraising shops in Victoria spanning environmental, social justice and human services, both professionally and as a volunteer.

Questions about AFP? We've got answers!

How does your gift to the Every Member Campaign impact our Vancouver Island chapter? What is the role of the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy Canada? These important questions have been addressed in a short video created by the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy Canada. We are so pleased to share this with you and demonstrate "your gift at work" through this this video.
  • For more than 50 years, AFP has been the standard-bearer of professionalism in fundraising
  • There are 20 AFP Canadian chapters, which support over 3,800 Canadian members
  • The AFP Foundation for Philanthropy Canada is committed to providing members with education and training to help them build (and enhance) best practices, which translates to strengthening the sector and society
  • In 2014, over $39,000 was distributed to Canadian members through 63 scholarships
  • Support for the Every Member Campaign in 2014 resulted in over $31,000 to be allocated for regional programming this year - our chapter received almost $1,400!
Often, when working in the non-profit sector, we forget to turn the lens on ourselves and the personal impact each of us makes. In honour of National Philanthropy Day, thank you for all you do in support of AFP Vancouver Island, the Every Member Campaign and in our communities.
