Dear Reader,
We have some great fun coming up! Be sure to check the left column to see some cool events.
Plus we're having in-store book fairs for two schools the first week of December so this is a great way to support schools by doing your normal holiday shopping.
Saturday, Dec. 5 we will start the day with a reading of the Nutcracker at 11. There may even be some awesome ballet dancers! Come for the fun.
At 1:30 you have to come by and shop to the amazing sounds of Trombonga, a trombone quartet. I kid you not and you have to come. Then we have a reading at 6 for grown ups. And part of the proceeds all day go to the Mills Children's School.
Wednesday, December 9 we will have an in-store fair for Oakland School for the Arts from 5 to 9. They are just down the block from our store and they don't have a library. We will have books on their wish lists on display for donation and again, a portion of the proceeds for that time will go their book fund.

If you're with a school and have a wish list that you'd like filled, please have your librarian contact us and we'll publicize it in the store and on our website. We want to make sure Oakland students have books! And we know we have generous customers who would like to donate one or two or six hundred.

Plus, I went on my first tour of Children's Fairyland today and had a blast! They have a small house on the grounds where there are shelves for books and comfy chairs for grown ups to hold a child in their lap and read. But the shelves are nearly empty!!
We'll get a wish list from them and put it up on our website and in the store in case you have fond memories of Fairyland and want to donate a book.
Thank you now for your generosity.

   And now, some new books!
Happy reading,
Luan

We are delighted to be hosting two barrels to collect food donations for the Alameda Food Bank.
Stop in to donate in the next couple of weeks.
Here is a list of recommendations.
Here is another one. (Some chocolate bars would be nice too.)
We'll have the barrels in the entryway for a couple of weeks so get in here!

Street Design; The Secret to Great Cities and Towns by Victor Dover and John Massengale $90
If you've been following the planning for downtown, and frankly you should- it's amazing- this is the book to have. It has so many wonderful ideas and explanations of how they came about and what other cities have done that it will get you all excited about what's possible for Oakland. I doubt that it's just me. I've been to a couple of meetings around this and as a new 'resident' of downtown, I'm very encouraged by what I've seen for our future. Oakland needs a really great, workable and viable downtown. Let's do it!

A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms by George R.R. Martin $30 Before Tyrion Lannister and Podrick Payne, there was Dunk and Egg. A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals-in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg-whose true name (hidden from all he and Dunk encounter) is Aegon Targaryen. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits.

Game of Scones; All Men Must Dine by Jammy Lannister $16.99  This is a great parody and gift for anyone who is a Game of Thrones fan. Oh, you know you have them in your life, if you're not one yourself. Get it, make something for them from it, and give them the book. Simple as that.

The Mission Chinese Food Cookbook by Danny Bowien and Chris Young $34.99
From the star chef, founder, and co-owner of the wildly popular restaurant Mission Chinese Food, comes a riotous, unconventional cookbook packed with inventive recipes that embody his signature mash-up of "Chinese" food and American classics.
Born out of a food truck that roamed the late night streets of San Francisco's Mission District, Mission Chinese Food started life as a pop-up, a rough-and-tumble joint that served radically reimagined "Chinese food" inside an old Americanized Chinese restaurant after hours. The incredible resourcefulness and unbridled inventiveness of Danny Bowien's dishes have hungry diners queuing up in both San Francisco and New York City, waiting hours to enjoy delights such as Sizzling Cumin Lamb Breast and Kung Pao Pastrami.

Later Poems, Selected and New 1971-2012 by Adrienne Rich $19.95 In Later Poems: Selected and New 1971-2012, the strong trajectory of the work of one of the most important artists of American letters is on display. This volume brings together a remarkable body of work. Included are Adrienne Rich's own selections from twelve volumes of published works, including the National Book Award-winning Diving Into the Wreck, An Atlas of the Difficult World, and her most recent volume, Tonight No Poetry Will Serve, along with ten powerful new poems, previously uncollected.

Depraved Heart by Patricia Cornwell $28.99
Dr. Kay Scarpetta is working a suspicious death scene in Cambridge, Massachusetts when an emergency alert sounds on her phone. A video link lands in her text messages and seems to be from her computer genius niece Lucy. But how can it be? It's clearly a surveillance film of Lucy taken almost twenty years ago.
As Scarpetta watches she begins to learn frightening secrets about her niece, whom she has loved and raised like a daughter. That film clip and then others sent soon after raise dangerous legal implications that increasingly isolate Scarpetta and leave her confused, worried, and not knowing where to turn. She doesn't know whom she can tell-not her FBI husband Benton Wesley or her investigative partner Pete Marino. Not even Lucy.

Carol by Patricia Highsmith $14.99 In Carol, two women from different backgrounds-one a department store clerk who dreams of a better life, one who is wealthy and married-strike up a love affair with each other in 1950s New York. With a story based on Highsmith's 1952 novel-originally titled The Price of Salt, which she published under the pseudonym Claire Morgan-Carol the movie is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Todd Haynes.

Our friends at new Oakland publisher Know Yourself invite you and the family to the launch of their new books all about the body on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Impact Hub.
