CLC Meeting Rooms and Offices

Thanks to donors like you, literacy instruction from CLC is free to adults in our community who lack the basic skills many of us take for granted.  Even though there is no charge for the assistance we offer adult learners, the service is far from free. In this article you can learn how your donor dollar provides the CLC meeting rooms and offices it takes to operate a successful adult literacy program. Well-equipped facilities are extremely important to the tutoring process.

Craven Literacy has 1 large training room complete with a projector and presentation capabilities. This space houses tutor workshops and larger adult literacy classes.  6 smaller meeting rooms permit volunteers to meet one-on-one or in small groups with their student(s). All meeting areas are equipped with computers, wireless internet, whiteboards and various supplies and materials to make instruction as productive and effective as possible. A resource library, 3 offices, and assessment room complement the meeting spaces and are located in a newly expanded unit in the same building at 2507 Neuse Blvd.

As the demand for literacy skills continues to grow, so does the need for tutoring space. If you would like to make an ongoing commitment to support adult literacy, we invite you to become a CLC Literacy Leader. Click Here For More Info.

CLC honors volunteers with annual appreciation dinner

On September 29, 2015, CLC staff honored the volunteers of the organization with the annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Over 80 individuals in attendance enjoyed a wonderful Italian dinner from La Casetta of New Bern and homemade appetizers and desserts made by the five part-time staff. Each volunteer also received a CLC coffee mug filled with a Volunteer's Survival Kit. LuAnn Rottman of Havelock was named the Volunteer of the Year for her outstanding service and advocacy of adult literacy in our community. Three individuals were inducted into the Grand Club - for achieving over 1,000 volunteer lifetime hours with CLC:  Nancy Galway, Alberta Harvey, and Sharon Taylor-Fernandes. Everyone shared a fun evening celebrating wonderful volunteers who are an integral part of the mission of Craven Literacy Council.

If you would like to become an adult literacy volunteer, we invite you to attend our next orientation and new tutor training workshop coming in January. Click Here for More Info

Meet an Adult Learner: Gloria Aranda
Student Succeeds Thank to Donor Support for Literacy

When Gloria Aranda came to Craven Literacy Council in 2007 with a high school certificate from her native Colombia, her oral English abilities were sufficient only to satisfy basic survival needs and very routine social demands. She appealed to Craven Literacy Council for help communicating effectively so that she could be involved at her daughter's school, participate in her church, find employment, and ultimately become a U.S. citizen. Three years later Gloria's oral skills had increased so much that she could function independently and competently in social and work situations. She is now actively involved with her daughter's schooling and is comfortable interacting with her daughter's counselor. Gloria understands the English sermons at her church and sings the hymns in English. We are especially proud to announce that this year Gloria achieved her goal of becoming a US citizen.
