WHAT DOES CHANGE LOOK LIKE?

A couple of weeks ago, there was a knock on the CLC front door. I opened it to find a stranger - not a librarian, but a Wesleyan student named Adrian. Adrian excitedly told me that he was taking a "Money and Social Change" class, and that the class had selected CLC as one of four non-profits to receive a $2,500 grant. He promised to send me more information, and left.
I was puzzled and a little skeptical about the whole incident until this past Monday evening, when I attended an award reception given by Adrian's class. I learned that ten students and a passionate non-profit director/professor took on the challenge of sifting through information on over 180 Middlesex County non-profits - in their words, a "meticulous, arduous, and very gratifying process" - in order to find four that fit the story they crafted for their grant funding. They sought to recognize organizations that "speak to systems changes or bridge systemic gaps," and that "foster independence in people and in institutions." I was inspired, humbled, and thrilled that a library organization made the cut in the eyes of these future funders. At a time of year that is devoted to giving, this was indeed an unexpected gift, both financial and inspirational.
So, what does change look like? For me, it looks like Adrian - the unknown entity who stepped through our door and brought unexpected opportunities. This year, CLC focused on building community, and we relied heavily on that community for support. As the year comes to a close, it seems appropriate that we have forged a new community partnership in order to strengthen our organization and better serve you, our constituents. I'm glad we opened the door when opportunity knocked.
Wishing you all the best,
Jennifer
