Greetings from the Director for the Office of LGBTQA Affairs GREETINGS

Greetings!

It is an honor and privilege to serve as the first Director for the Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer & Ally (LGBTQA) Affairs at Wright State University.

The Office of LGBTQA Affairs was founded in January of 2015 as a new addition to the Division of Multicultural Affairs & Community Engagement at Wright State University. The office is staffed by the Director and one Graduate Assistant and has been fully staffed since August of 2015. It precedes the part-time staff member (graduate assistant) hired for GLBTQA Initiatives by Student Activities & the GLBTQA Resource Room (both founded in 2011).

The Office of LGBTQA Affairs serves all Wright State students, staff, faculty, and alumni through four core tenets: Advocacy, Community Engagement, Education, & Support. The Office of LGBTQA Affairs accomplish these tenets by:
  • Advocacy- Recommending & maintaining best Institutional policies and practices that ensure the holistic development and success of the LGBTQ & Ally communities at Wright State University.
  • Community Engagement- Facilitating cultural programs, advising & supporting student organizations, and fostering relationships with the greater Dayton community.
  • Education- Producing multiple educational opportunities for the Wright State Community to develop a stronger understanding of the complex intersections of Identity, Culture, & Social Justice Allyship.
  • Support- Providing resources & referrals that assist and affirm LGBTQ & Ally Wright State students, staff, and faculty to persist to academic and professional goals.
My role as the Director is to facilitate and guide the university's work directly related to LGBTQ & Ally issues on campus; to support and advocate for the needs of LGBTQ students, faculty, staff, alumni and greater Dayton community members; and to oversee the growth and staff of the Office of LGBTQA Affairs and the LGBTQA Community Engagement Room.

Creating a campus in which the Wright State community learns to look at the world critically and compassionately with the ability to be inclusive of LGBTQ+ individuals is my ultimate goal.

I hope that the information in the Office of LGBTQA Affairs newsletter helps you to stay informed, stay engaged, and encourages you to partner with the office to achieve our shared goal of transforming our communities to be inclusive of LGBTQ people.

Warm Regards,

Petey Peterson, M.Ed.
