It's that time of year again. Making sure we get everything done from keeping it together at work to decorating the house, entertaining friends, selecting the right gifts, in line at the post office... again, planning a great meal AND whatever else you forgot you promised.

But then it's all over. Where is your head at the end of it all? Are you tired, sad, weary, unfulfilled? There are many things that offer you an escape from your worries and concerns, but are they permanent? D o the worries and concerns keep returning?

Come back to your essence, come back to your Spirit, through the simplicity of watching your breath. Inhale-pause-exhale-pause, repeat. - DaoShima

Odissi Dance by Shauna Taylor
Odissi is a yogic dance that is rooted in ancient history, rich culture and timeless energies. My love for this dance comes from its ability to speak universally to all people, regardless of your language or cultural background.  I believe it does this because of its connection with the Earth... that which we are all part of.

If you ever have the chance to view an Odissi Repertoire, do your best to pull your eyes away from the stage and watch the other people in the crowd watching the dance. People are always mesmerized. The dance is designed to bring the audience into the experience, and the dancer is taught to channel the energy of the universe through her body and project it into the room... sharing it with all... in a language that everyone can feel in their own way. This is one of my favorite things about this dance.

When you dance Odissi, you are dancing steps that people have danced for many many years. You are depicting with your body poses shapes that have existed inside the ancient temples of India since the 1st Century. These are ancient movements that have been infused with history. Your body connects through these movements to something timeless and greater than any one person.

When we begin any dance rehearsal or any dance performance, we take the time to ask the Earth for permission to stomp our feet on her; and as we conclude our dance we thank her again for allowing us to do so.

First, we bring energy to the feet through rhythmic stomping and footwork, which allows us to connect strongly to the Earth. Then we begin moving the rest of our body, from the torso to the hands to the head, neck, face and eyes. Every aspect of the dancer's body is engaged completely, requiring a calm concentration and a deep connection to the Earth.

For all of these reasons, I am in love with Odissi  and want to share it with YOU!  Odissi takes patience and dedication, but it gives back tenfold in life lessons -- awareness, deep calmness and gorgeous body movement.
