Introduction to Creative Aging: Myths of Aging and the Power of the Arts

Phoenix Art Museum
Learn about the myths of aging and how arts engagement benefits older adults! Jorge Merced, Associate Artistic Director of Pregones Theater, will provide a keynote on Creative Aging and an interactive exploration of the different approaches used across the continuum of care, and Dr. Walter Nieri, Director of The Center for Health Aging at Banner Sun Health Research Institute, will share current research on healthy aging and the factors that contribute to quality of life.
Who should attend? Anyone interested in the vital relationship between the arts and quality of life for older adults, including aging or healthcare service organization staff, teaching artists, and arts organization staff.
This event is free, but registration is required.
Registration closes Tuesday, January 12, 2016.

Fiscal Year 2017 Arts Learning Grants
The Arizona Commission on the Arts is deeply committed to promoting and supporting lifelong learning in, through and about the arts. The Arts Learning Grant program is central to the agency's arts learning mission. To ensure that these grants continue to serve the sector's evolving needs, reach applicants where they are, and direct essential funding support to the most diverse range of programs and projects, the Arts Learning Grant program will be substantially renovated for Fiscal Year 2017.
What does this mean for you?
- A new, more convenient application schedule, with multiple deadlines per year
- A simpler, more accessible application process
- Funding for more expansive collaborative project possibilities
- Eligible applicants will still include schools, school districts, non-profit social service/community organizations and units of government

New Federal Education Bill Passes
The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the new federal K-12 education bill, was signed into law in December 2015. The bipartisan measure reauthorizes the 50-year-old Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), the nation's national education law and longstanding commitment to equal opportunity for all students. Benefits of the Arts in STEM Learning
The
Art of Science Learning is a National Science Foundation-funded initiative exploring innovation at the intersection of art, science and learning by using the arts to spark creativity in STEM education. Researchers have been studying arts-based learning's impact on creative thinking skills, collaborative behaviors and innovation outcomes, and share their findings in a recently release report.

The Arts in Early Childhood
The Arts in Early Childhood: Social and Emotional Benefits of Arts Participation is a new report from the National Endowment for the Arts that synthesizes findings from 18 recent reports in psychology and education research journals. These studies focused on the social and emotional outcomes of young children who participated in art forms such as music, dance, theater, drawing and painting.

Mesa Arts Center Jazz A to Z Educator Workshops

The Gershwin Legacy: Fascinating Rhythms of People of New York is an interactive, interdisciplinary workshop that focuses on the life, times and music of George and Ira Gershwin in conjunction with the migration of African Americans and Eastern European Jews to New York City in the early part of the 20th century. The session will give an over view of a ready to use, interdisciplinary unit which addresses both the Arizona State Social Studies standards as well as Common Core English Language Arts standards for drawing evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection and research.
Desert Botanical Garden Teacher Workshop
February 6, 2016
The STEAM/Biomimicry workshop will explore the connections between science and design through the lens of biomimicry. This training accompanies the curriculum for the newest Garden tours based on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) education and
Common Core Standards.

NAMM Foundation Best Communities for Music Education Award
Deadline: January 30, 2016
The NAMM Foundation invites school districts and schools across the country to participate in its 17th annual Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) survey. This national award program recognizes commitment to music education and efforts to assure that comprehensive music education is part of the core curriculum for every child.

2016 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards
Deadline: February 2, 2016
The President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, is accepting applications for the 2016 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards. After-school and out-of-school time arts and humanities programs are encouraged to apply.

Arizona Citizens for the Arts' annual advocacy day, Arizona Arts Congress, will take place Tuesday, February 4, 2016 at the Arizona State Capitol.

NEA Art Works Grants

Arts Works Grants support the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and the strengthening of communities through the arts. NEA staff will conduct guidelines workshops for potential applicants via webinar in January.
