The Dating and Relationship Group:
Love in Midlife
The AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired Persons) has released two intriguing studies on the romantic tendencies of those in midlife (aged 45) and older entitled
"Lifestyles, Dating & Romance: A Study of Midlife Singles" and "
Sex, Romance and Relationships: AARP Survey of Midlife and Older Adults." These reports contain a wealth of information on all aspects of romantic love in this period of life including dating habits, emotional and physical intimacy, and attitudes toward relationships.
In the next meeting of the Dating and Relationship Group on Saturday, January 16, 2016, 12:00 to 1:15 PM noon, I will summarize the major findings of these works and describe my view of the implications of this research for current midlifers as well as for younger and older generations.
The Men's Group:
Understanding Personality
The scientific study of personality has evolved over time in significant and rather unexpected ways. Yet little of the knowledge gained in this area has been made available to the general public. What is most unfortunate about this gap is that the psychological constructs concerning personality functioning hold great utility for any individual who is interested in understanding his/her intentions, motivations, emotional and behavioral tendencies, and inner life.
In the next meeting of the Men's Group on Saturday, January 16, 2016, 10:45 AM to 12:00 PM noon, I will trace the evolution of the study of personality beginning with the Ancient Greeks' notions of temperament and moving on to Freud's views of mental conflict and defense, Jung's psychological and functional types, the Myers Briggs, Hans Eyesenck's groundbreaking theorizing, Brain-Type Theory, the DISC Model, Team Role Theory, and the Big 5 Factors. Discussion will focus on how these diverse conceptualizations of personality relate to commonly-experienced stress and suffering, relationship difficulties, and psychiatric illness.
