Lest you think Fort Tuthill County Park is the only county park where you can enjoy wintertime activities, read about Jeff and Abby's
cross country ski trip to Rogers Lake County Natural Area.
Parks and Recreation staff member Jeff and Abby, his girlfriend, skied out to the new shade structure at
Rogers Lake this January to enjoy some hot drinks. Jeff remarked, "Nobody has been there since the first snowfall this year. Being we have not had much snow since this was built, it may well have been the first time anyone has skied there. In any case, it's beautiful out there in the winter."

Jeff and Abby parked near the Arboretum at Flagstaff on Woody Mountain Road and skied the road to make time. Then they followed some snowmobile tracks up into the upland before breaking trail at the property line fence. It is kind of a far ski, and they wish the road was plowed out to Parks and Recreation's new trailhead, however Woody Mountain Road past the Arboretum isn't maintained in winter.
The sledding hill at Fort Tuthill County Park is just one of many
popular snow play areas in Northern Arizona. And one thing they have in common, unfortunately, is that visitors leave behind trash in the forest after a fun-filled day. Broken sleds comprise the majority of trash, but people also leave behind items like food wrappers and baby diapers.
Help us keep the forest and recreation sites clean, and practice "pack it in, pack it out". Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics has information on
Winter Recreation Leave No Trace, with tips like plan ahead and prepare, and dispose of waste properly.
Parks and Recreation staff regularly clean up after weekend visitors and a large snow storm, but staff hours add up. Watch a
video by NAZ Today about the National Forest Service and cleaning up winter litter.
