On Wednesday, May 13, United States Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez visited the City of St. Petersburg to highlight our City of Opportunity initiatives, including raising the minimum wage for city workers, banning the box on city employment applications, and implementing six weeks of paid family leave. St. Petersburg Tribune: New pier is start of big changes for downton St. Petersburg's waterfront
If you're the head of the chamber of commerce, and Chris Steinocher is, the coming of a new pier and an extensive master development plan are more than simply good news for downtown and the waterfront.
"It's like hitting the Lotto," Steinocher, president of the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce, said this past week. "It's going to be transforming in front of our eyes."

Sunshine State News: St. Pete's credit rating gets a welcomed boost
The City of St. Petersburg's credit rating has been upgraded by Moody's Investors Services from negative to stable. The upgrade in the issuer rating is based on the city's large tax base, improved operating reserves and conservative budgeting practices.
The upgrade "reflects the city's return to positive financial operations.

Mayor Rick Kriseman's budget has a little more space to breathe thanks to a booming tax base and some pension relief.
His plan does not include a property tax increase. And several new hires and a "restoration" of police overtime number among the highlights.

Businesses that provide paid leave for their workers are acting out of enlightened self-interest, not charity, according to U.S. Secretary of Labor Tom Perez.
Perez discussed the importance of paid leave - and stumped for a stalled congressional proposal to annually grant Americans seven days of paid sick time that could be used to take care of family members - during a press conference in St. Petersburg.

As part of a national tour to promote the idea of paid family leave, U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez spoke on the steps of St. Petersburg's City Hall about why allowing workers to, you know, take care of their children when they need to, is a good thing for everyone.
He was joined by Mayor Rick Kriseman and other city officials as well as Brian Auld, president of the Tampa Bay Rays, and Trevor Burgess, CEO of C1 Bank, both of whom offer paid parental and sick leave for their employees, among other benefits.

Bay News 9: St. Pete mayor applauded for new parental leave policy
Jessica Eilerman is the Small Business Liaison for the City of St. Petersburg. She is also a new mother to son Vincent Gabriel and just got back from maternity leave two weeks ago.
"To be able to develop not just that relationship but to be able to see him on that day to day basis, to see him growing from morning to night was amazing," Eilerman said. "Something I'll never get back. So I cherish it so much."

St. Petersburg Tribune: U.S. Labor Secretary praises St. Pete's pro-employee policis U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez on Wednesday commended Mayor Rick Kriseman for increasing the minimum wage for city workers and instituting a parental leave program for full-time employees.
The news conference outside City Hall featuring Perez was part of the White House administration's "Lead on Leave" tour, a nationwide campaign that aims to inform employers, workers, and local and state officials of the need for paid leave. The tour also looks to raise awareness of a bill initiated by President Obama that would give all government employees seven days per year of paid sick time.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez praised local political and business leaders Wednesday for enacting paid leave and raising wages for low-paid workers, saying the country was lagging the rest of the developed world in supporting a flexible work force.
"We're in this Modern Family world but we've got these Leave it to Beaver rules," Perez said.
