What makes a community?
leadstory
I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. For me, it's a conflux of people comfortably situated in a close geographical area, their basic needs satisfied, and sharing commonality of purpose.

Lots of people live together without motivational overlap. And there are certainly close-knit communities in which basic needs are only marginally met. Perhaps in the latter situation, the bonds that tie are even stronger. We have the good grace and potential in our mid-valley area to form a strong community built upon an evolving well-thought out vision and collaborative planning process.

Affordability, not just housing.

It has been said repeatedly that part of what's needed in the Roaring Fork Valley is affordability. People talk about housing, but affordability goes far beyond that. It encompasses child care, easy transport, accessible entertainment, medical costs, insurance and more.

The topic of health insurance has come up like a sneak storm with the recent cancellation of Colorado HealthOP and concurrence of the 2016 policy enrollment on November 1. At the eye of the storm are three concerns: rising rates, hefty deductibles, unexpected cancellations and narrowing options.

"The Affordable Care Act did not do in the high country what it did for the rest of Colorado. While thousands across the state got better health plans at more affordable rates, we continue to see that mountain communities face different challenges," ~ Kerry Donovan, Colorado Senate District 5

We have access to among the best hospitals at either end of our Valley, top-notch cancer centers, orthopedic specialists and an out-patient surgical and care center right here in Basalt. But people - particularly those on Medicare or Medicaid, ineligible for credits, or not covered under employer policies - are struggling to find premiums to fit their oft-challenged budgets and are finding that high premiums only protect against catastrophic loss. Out-of-pocket costs will still dog them through the year.

While early methods of transferring risk in a monetary economy date back as far as 3rd millennia BC, health insurance only began to take root in the United States in the 1920s when people actually lived long enough to make it to their doctor or hospital and costs became a consideration.

The goal then was as it is now: to create a system of shared risk and a pool of funds for spontaneous coverage for each and every participant. Now nearly a century later, the issue and technical foundations have become sharply polarized and we find ourselves looking to Denver or DC for answers.

Tonight We Have an Opportunity Here in Basalt to ask for explanations and work together to find answers

I have an important favor to ask of you

Whatever else you might have planned, please consider instead joining us tonight. It was a herculean effort to bring these esteemed people together in just two weeks. We need YOU to show them that you care, are willing to be involved and have a voice.

I thank especially State Senator Kerry Donovan, Connect for Health Linda Gann and former State Senator Gail Schwartz for providing the encouragement, connections and boost that made this possible. I also send huge appreciation over the mountains to Vince Plymell and Tom Abel of the Colorado Division of Insurance, and Larry Dupper of Valley View Hospital, for their willingness at this busy time to drive to Basalt to meet with us. Sculco Creative donated the poster design, always much appreciated. Aspen Valley Hospital, Premier Medical CenterCommunity Banks of Colorado,  Vectra Bank for pitching in for event costs: sound, promotions and the GrassRoots video that will take this event beyond Basalt. The Aspen Times, Aspen Daily News, Aspen Public Radio, KSNO, KDNK and others jumped right in to get the word out. Sponsors are still needed and will be reco gnized in the video. New Chamber members are always welcome. Please write me for details.

It takes a community.

It Had to Happen!
I've heard that among the most read sections of a newspaper is the oops-I-goofed corrections box. Now, today I'm introducing that popular feature to the Basalt Chamber of Commerce weekly newsletter.

First, apologies go Rich Carr, Partner|Principal of CCY Architects. Yes there are two C's there and I inadvertently left out Carr in the lead-in to the story about the firm's distinguished Firm of the Year Award for 2015. This highest of honors bestowed by the American Institute of Architects is well-deserved by our Basalt-based firm, and Rich's integrated approach to design and elegant place making contributed fundamentally to this recognition and others throughout the nation. Thanks Cottle Carr Yaw for making us so proud!

In the same series of recent proud recognitions I posted a picture of the Bucksbaum Campus that garnered the prestigious AIA Western Mountain Region 2015 Design Excellence|Distinguished Building Category highest Honor Award for Harry Teague Architects

We're honored to have such fine architects in our community and I'm pleased to have an opportunity to again highlight these stellar accomplishments!
Let it be known that this newsletter is generally born under the stars as music and people reverie waft from downtown restaurants..... and alas no copy editor. I thank you all through this last year for your forbearance  with my typos, errors & omissions most of which I find myself in the morning with a grimace and groan.
6 Key Areas to Outsource When Starting A Business

By Michael Evans

Business dynamism (the number of new U.S. businesses formed versus the number closed) has slowed dramatically over the last few decades, despite the record amount of money held by venture capitalists and banks for investments and loans to emerging growth business.
There are many reasons for this, but clearly one of the significant issues is  cost: the money and time needed to set up a new business, including regulatory and compliance costs, labor, infrastructure, and more.
in The Hartford BIZAHEAD

Costs for a startup business can generally be classified into six major categories:
  • Cost of sales: Product inventory, raw materials, manufacturing equipment, shipping, packaging, shipping insurance, warehousing. A substantial amount of upfront money is needed to fund your initial product inventory for sale.

Did it take you a while to get down to the bottom of this newsletter?

Some of our members thought it might. They asked if we could give their ads and notices more prominent visibility. In case you missed it, last week  we launched the new "Basalt Chamber Member Mondays News & Upcoming Events." Watch for it on Monday mornings.

We'll post your ads, event posters, job announcement, invitations and any other designed outreach materials. Just send us your file in jpg format a few days ahead. It's free for Chamber members once a quarter, with a nominal fee thereafter.
Applications for 2016 Business After Hours hosting are already exciting. There's an idea for a patio party, another for showroom gathering. Prospective co-hosts are planning together to create great networking and after-hours social events for the new year.  Please submit your application by November 15.

Applicants must be members of the Basalt Chamber in good standing. Preference will be given to those who've not hosted an event in the last 12 months and for creative and collaborative themes.

But don't let that put you off. If you'd like to host an event and don't have a co-host in mind, contact us and we'll help create a match. If you don't have a storefront and would like to co-host an event with a bricks and mortar business, let us know and we'll connect you. There are many ways to get involved.

Business After Hours are an important Chamber networking benefit. Hosts have an opportunity to showcase your businesses and connect informally with other members. Download your application here and email it by November 1 or mail it to Basalt Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 514, Basalt, CO 81621.

The purpose of the RFP will be to provide candidates with the scope of expectation and evaluation criteria against which their applications will be judged.

The Basalt Chamber of Commerce is accepting proposals from qualified website designers to consolidate, enhance and upgrade the functionality of our Basalt, CO website and create a separate Economic Development website.
