FRESH & LOCAL
Our market-supporting chefs always show up to market early to get the best of the best, but the freshest features at market are the ripe young minds that beam with excitement when that opening bell rings. Each first Saturday market of the month, our market staff organizes a fun and educational activity to keep our youngest community members engaged. This week we have the team from Organ Wise Guys teaching kids about nutrition with their interactive, eye-catching dolls. On top of that, the Confetti Kids band from the wonderful, eponymous Algiers' organization will be providing some groovy music. We're excited to see our market community rally around the next generation of locavores!
PICK OF THE WEEK:
TULANE INFANT & TODDLER

As a non-profit organization, we aim to address the impediments to making healthy lifestyle choices. Tulane Infant & Toddler Development Project has reached out to us because they realize our community of shoppers is at the forefront of health-consciousness. To find out about their research on the development of motor and thinking abilities, join us at our Tuesday market. You might learn something new!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Gather stone-ground yellow grits or polenta from the Tuesday market and mushrooms from the Saturday market to create this delightful Mushroom and Herb Polenta recipe. The extra polenta can be made into polenta cakes by spreading it out in a shallow pan and allowing it to cool overnight. Next morning, cut it into pieces, and lightly fry in olive oil or butter. Tasty!
Mushroom and Herb Polenta
Gather stone-ground yellow grits or polenta from the Tuesday market and mushrooms from the Saturday market to create this delightful Mushroom and Herb Polenta recipe. The extra polenta can be made into polenta cakes by spreading it out in a shallow pan and allowing it to cool overnight. Next morning, cut it into pieces, and lightly fry in olive oil or butter. Tasty!
Ingredients
4 cups of mushrooms, very roughly chopped
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 Tbsp chopped thyme
½ cup stone-ground yellow grits or polenta
3 oz feta, crumbled
2 ½ Tbsp of butter
1 tsp finely chopped rosemary
2 Tbsp chopped parsley
4 oz brie, mozzarella, or other creamy, melting cheese, cut into thin slices
4 Tbsp olive oil
⅓ cup vermouth or dry white wine
salt and cracked black pepper
2 ¼ cups vegetable stock
Directions
Heat half the olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, add half the mushrooms, in a single layer and fry for a few minutes, or until just cooked; try not to move them much so they brown. Remove from the pan, and repeat with the rest of the mushrooms and oil. Add all of the mushrooms to the pan and add vermouth, scraping the bottom of the pan. Once all the liquid has evaporated turn off the heat, and add the garlic, thyme and some salt and pepper. Keep warm.
Bring the stock to boil in a saucepan. Slowly stir in the polenta then reduce the heat to the minimum and cook, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. The polenta is ready when it leaves the sides of the pan but is still runny. This will take between 40-50 minutes. Add stock or water if it seems to dry out but just enough to keep the consistency like a thick porridge.
Preheat the broiler. When the polenta is ready, stir in the feta, butter and rosemary. Season with salt and pepper. Spread the polenta over a heatproof dish and top with melting cheese slices. Place under the broiler for a minute to brown the cheese a bit and warm everything.
Tip: Extra polenta can be made into polenta cakes by spreading it in a shallow pan, allowing to cool overnight, cutting it into pieces, and lightly frying in olive oil or butter.

NEW ORLEANS, LA Chef Nick Lama of Restaurant Avo will be offering a traditional Southern Italian Christmas Eve dinner, The Feast of the Seven Fishes, during the entire month of December. The Feast of the Seven Fishes, which consists of seven different seafood dishes, is celebrated by Italian-American families every Christmas Eve. It commemorates the wait for the midnight birth of baby Jesus. Abstaining from meat on the eve of holy days, and replacing it with fish, is a long Catholic tradition. The feast of the seven fishes was an important occasion in our house growing up, with each family member crafting a favorite dish and sharing with family and friends.
Avo is open for dinner Monday through Saturday from 5:30PM until 10PM. Avo will be open on New Years Eve. For more information or reservations call (504) 509-6550.
Five friends who despite personal struggles are able to create the First Hill--a social media website which connects millions of cancer sufferers and survivors, giving them continual hope and strength during difficult times.
Lilac, an elegantly beautiful brunette, is the idealistic founder whose own family struggled fatefully with the disease and tirelessly propels The First Hill team to stay focused and never settle. Strong willed and yet still humble, she finds professional success early on, but her own romantic relationships are at best elusive.
James, a British documentarian, adds humor and modesty to the novel as he struggles to interview the team and uncover the truth about the successful startup to establish his own career. Through personal interviews and revelations of many reminiscent memories, we not only learn about the struggles of the start up but also about the personal fears, losses, and successes of each team member as well as James himself.
The authentic voices of each character in the novel remind us of our own best friends growing up, while their complicated personal relationships add depth and understanding of the tough choices which face us all when balancing the dynamics of friendship and family. By the end of the novel, Lilac, Mason, Dorian, Benjamin, and Ivy, are not just another bunch of characters, they are the memories of the friends we all shared growing up as we struggled with and embraced adulthood.

NOMA and The NOLA Project Present The Winter's Tale
Questions of loyalty, faithfulness, redemption and more are explored in one of Shakespeare's most beautiful and haunting plays, The Winter's Tale. Directed by NOLA Project Artistic Director A.J. Allegra, and presented at NOMA this December, The Winter's Tale tells the story of a king driven mad by suspicion and jealousy who loses everything and must find the forgiveness in his heart in order to regain his life's most valuable possession: the love of his family. This later work from Shakespeare, rich with beautiful verse and tinged with magical elements, is a beautiful piece for the holidays and is a welcome story of redemption. For this production, NOMA's iconic Great Hall will transform into the play's worlds of Sicilia and Bohemia. The NOLA Project has previously produced successful productions of Romeo & Juliet and Twelfth Night in the Great Hall and have become masters of surprising and delighting audiences with bold and innovative staging.

GINA FORSYTH UPDATE--November/December
This is to wish one and all a Happy Thanksgiving! On this day, I'm thankful for so much: for life, for still being able to play music after all these years, and to get to come to where you are and play it.
This is also to let everyone know that I will be playing in Louisiana (New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and even a foray into Morgan City) in December. A few great friends will be joining me for all of those shows. And I've got a new Cajun CD coming to you in time for Christmas--namely, with 18-year-old Cameron Dupuy on accordion, and his dad, Michael Dupuy on guitar. Together, we are the Mid-City Aces, and we'll be doing our first gig as the Mid-City Aces...in Mid-City--at the Banks St. Bar (Dec. 10).
But before that, I'll be playing with BOTH The Bruce Daigrepont Cajun Band and the Wasted Lives on the same night, Tuesday, Dec. 1: with Bruce at the St. Louis Cathedral from 6-7, and with the Wasted Lives at Mags (10 PM); at the Neutral Ground for First Thursday, Dec. 3, right before Mark Fernandez; and the night after, Friday, December 4, I'll be at the Red Dragon in Baton Rouge, opening for Greg Trooper, a great songwriter from NYC who I got to sit in with way back in the 90s. With any luck, I'll get to do that again.
Speaking of the Red Dragon, this coming Sunday, November 29, my friend from Houston, Matt Harlan, will be playing there. Like me, Matt Harlan was an Emerging Artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival this year. I love his writing and his understated style. Steve Judice will be opening for him. I can't recommend this show highly enough.
There is much more to report: I'm still mixing the fiddle CD. That will be out early next year. And there'll be more news about holiday shows in the coming weeks. With that will be another newsletter or two. If you hear a lot from me this month, that will be why. And this schedule:
December
Tues. 1 St. Louis Cathedral w/ Bruce Daigrepont 6-7 pm
Tues. 1 Mags (N. Rampart at Elysian Fields) w/ The Wasted Lives 10 pm
Thurs. 3 Neutral Ground, 8 pm (First Thursday w/ Mark Fernandez and friends)

FILMING NOTICES FOR RESIDENTS IN THE FRENCH QUARTER
NEW ORLEANS - Today, the Mayor's Office of Cultural Economy issued filming notices to residents in the French Quarter.
On Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015 and Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015, a production company will film exterior scenes on the 900-1000 blocks of Royal Street and on the 600-700 blocks of St. Philip Street. As a result, the intersections of Royal Street and Ursulines Avenue and Bourbon and St. Philip Streets and Ursulines Avenue and Royal Street will close from 5 p.m. until 7 a.m. both days.
The New Orleans Fire Department and law enforcement officers will be on site ensure public safety and to help facilitate the work.

Ogden After Hours - Roman Street
05:30 PM - 08:00 PM
Brothers Noah and Josh Thompson put their guitars together to form Roman Street. This brotherly jam session has developed into a Billboard-and-iTunescharting band, that many have dubbed 'the next generation' of Jazz Fusion. Named for a street in the Alps, they are an instrumental band specializing in an improvisational fusion of Classical, Gypsy and Contemporary Jazz, Latin, and Nuevo Flamenco. The brothers keep it simple, focusing on the beautifully organic sound of acoustic instruments played by talented people who love what they are doing. Whether performing as a guitar duo or with a backing band, Roman Street astounds with music that appeals to fans of many genres.

Dine with Mosquito Supper Club
Two charming hosts (and fantastic cooks) serve up authentic Cajun food, family-style.
Martin brings her family's food from Chauvin, LA, to the city in a family-style setting. Platters are set down on the table, and everyone digs in. It's a dining style New Orleanians relate to, whether they're from Irish, German, Italian, or Afro-Caribbean families. Cajun music fills the dining room (limited seating, reservations only) as guests enjoy a five-plus course meal.
A sample menu, this one for fall, is quintessentially Cajun: doughy "Lagniappe Rolls" with Steen's Butter (as if butter isn't decadent enough, this one is laced with cane syrup from Abbeville, LA); crispy eggplant fritters; gumbo with shrimp, crab, and okra; cucumber and tomato salad with Steen's vinaigrette; stuffed Lousiana crabs; and blackberry dumplings with "Pop Rouge" ice cream for dessert. (Local folk of a certain age may remember the old "Pop Rouge" strawberry/cream soda from Lafayette.)
This fall, Mosquito Supper Club commences on Thursday nights at 810 N. Rampart Street, a light-filled, second-story space in the French Quarter with a can't-beat-it view of Armstrong Park. Dinner begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. Go to their site's reservations page to book your seats... and meet your adopted Cajun family.
Extra helping: Michot and Martin also run Curious Oyster Company in St. Roch Market, open daily, if you can't make it to a supper club event.
WHAT: Rivertown Theaters for the Performing Arts continues their commitment to showcase and develop the talents of budding local thespians with the very special holiday premiere production of Fancy Nancy's Splendiferous Christmas based on the popular children's book.
What could be fancier than Christmas? Presents with elegant wrapping paper, festive decorations, Christmas cookies with sprinkles - and who could forget the tree? After all, there is no such thing as too much tinsel. Ooh la la! This year, Nancy is especially excited. After selling some of her old gowns and accessories, Nancy has enough money to buy a brand-new sparkly tree topper. She can't wait to decorate the Christmas tree. But when things don't turn out the way Nancy planned, will Christmas still be splendiferous? After last year's sold out Fancy Nancy The Musical run, she's back for an all new holiday adventure! Plan a holiday date with your fancy friends and book your tickets today!
The delightful holiday musical will appeal to the whole family and feature young
performers from around the metropolitan New Orleans area. Cast members will
be in the lobby after the show for a meet and greet with the audience.
Rivertown Theaters for the Performing Arts kicked off its "BROADWAY SERIES AT RIVERTOWN" schedule for their inaugural 2012-2013 seasonwith a new name, a new management company, Theatre 13, and new artistic directors, Gary Rucker and Kelly Fouchi. The mission of Theatre 13 is to bring new and exciting productions to the New Orleans area while providing local theatre artists an opportunity to perform and create. The US Soccer Federation announced Tuesday that New Orleans will play host to the last stop on the Women's World Cup Victory Tour.
The squad's first trip to the Big Easy since 2003 will be a special one as their 10-game tour across America commemorating the 2015 title in Canada comes to a close on Wednesday, December 16th at 7 PM in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Championship game-scorer Lauren Holiday has a connection to the city thanks to her husband, Jrue, being traded to the Pelicans in 2012 and has been pushing for New Orleans to get in on the victory tour. "I've actually been kind of bugging them to tell me 'Could New Orleans be a possibility!? Could New Orleans be a possibility?!' So I'm excited and I'll be there and be cheering them on and I'm excited just to be experiencing it here."
Holiday announced her retirement from club and country soccer shortly after the World Cup and is already scheduled to play her farewell game October 25th in Orlando against Brazil. Now that she is no longer playing club football in Kansas City, she hopes to have an influence on the sport in Louisiana. "I would love to grow the game here. The women's side...I don't know if it's as big as other states so I would love to see what I can do here and inspire young girls and boys to continue to play the game I love."
Ticket information has yet to be released.
