Featured Child - Ellen
Ellen was born on July 1, 2004. She has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy and is developmentally delayed. Ellen is a beautiful little girl! She can walk with a walking aid, feed herself and take her shoes off and on. She can speak clearly and understands well. Ellen listens carefully in class, likes to help others and enjoys writing and drawing.

The Child Exchange and How to Better Serve Adoptive Families
In the series called "The Child Exchange" Reuters analyzed 5,029 posts from a five-year period on a Yahoo message board. On average, a child was advertised on the site once a week in a practice called "re-homing". Most of the children ranged in age from 6 to 14 and had been adopted from countries such as Russia, China, Ethiopia and Ukraine.
Watch this VIDEO to learn about "re-homing" and why adoptive families need extra support after adoption finalization. Some families feel lost, overwhelmed, and frustrated when dealing with their child's behavioral challenges. Pure desperation cause some families to seek help through online forums and even alternative places for their child to live.
This story has created mass media attention and highlights the importance of proper post-adoption and preservation services. Post-adoption services can help children and youth to deal with their emotions, mourn previous losses, and come to terms with their experiences and present circumstances. Services also can support adoptive parents in understanding and addressing issues related to their child's loss, separation, trauma, attachment, and identity.
There are many great online resources that provide information on several post-adoption topics. Adoption Learning Partners and Heart of the Matter Seminars are just a couple of websites that offer numerous courses on adoption and child development, including "Discipline & the Adopted Child", "Adopting the Older Child", "Talking to Your Child about Adoption", and "Understanding Trauma in Children".

Children in Families First
Senator Mary Landrieu and 13 other Members of Congress have introduced the Children in Families First Act of 2013 (CHIFF) into the Senate. CHIFF is built on the idea that American law should reflect the human truth that children need families. Around the world, millions of children are growing up without parental care, in institutions or worse. CHIFF will realign U.S. foreign assistance to prioritize children growing up in families; focus on protecting children by preserving, reunifying or creating families through kinship, domestic and international adoption; and strengthen procedures to prevent abuse of children without families, all without increasing spending. CHIFF makes our government smarter, not bigger, by redirecting resources that are currently not being well used.
Here's how you can get involved:
1.) Learn about the bill.
2.) Contact your members of Congress.
3.) Distribute this information to friends, family, co-workers, etc.
4.) Stay connected through Facebook, Twitter, and CHIFF mailing list.
