Over this long cold winter the 12 Metre Yacht Club, Newport Station officers have been very busy! Here's a quick overview of what we have been up to:
We have started organizing a spectacular series of regattas for 2019 that will culminate in the next 12 Metre World Championship to be held in American waters. Twelves from around the world will be invited to race in events throughout 2 ? months in May, June and July at 4 or 5 venues in New England, preceded by an inaugural regatta in the Caribbean. Our goal is to create the largest largest gathering of 12 Metre yachts since the 2001 America's Cup Jubilee in Cowes. Imagine 20-25 12 Metres racing together in the waters off Newport!
Our Treasurer, and intrepid video journalist, Jamie Hilton has begun producing interviews with key members of the
12 Metre fleet. His first video with
KZ-3, New Zealand owner, Gunther Buerman is already posted on
our new website (more on that below). Jamie has tapped many other
12 metre aficionados and scheduled a number of shoots throughout the months ahead. Look for Jamie's videos to be

Our new website, 12metreyachtclub.org has been funded by the Board of the 12 Metre Yacht Club and designed by Windlass Creative. Make it your first stop for information on the Newport 12 metre fleet, news, history, videos, photos, racing schedules, result links, social events, 12s for sale, membership and more. We have included dedicated pages for each yacht in the fleet and welcome owners, captains and crews to provide additional information to be included on their respective boat pages. Growing the Newport fleet and increasing overall interest in the 12 Metre Class is a big priority! Having exciting sailing at innovative events, followed by good press is one of the strategies we are pursuing to grow your fleet. Several ambitious projects are in the works to achieve these ends. My personal interest in seeing the Newport 12 Metre fleet succeed and grow stem from having the privilege of sailing on Courageous from 2005-2009. In addition to sailing 12s, I've also enjoyed racing 6 Metres for the last 4 seasons in Europe and have come to appreciate the synergies that exist between the Metre boat classes. These shared interests have spawned the idea for a combined Metre Boat Regatta. While logistics and dates are still being explored, we are optimistic that this could become an historic gathering of formula racing yachts and sailors in Newport in the near future... read more
Also, as mentioned above, I am working to produce a series of videos, one with each owner(s) of a 12 in the Newport the fleet. These videos will be published on our new 12 MYC website. The more we reveal the unique story of each boat along with the "whys" and "hows" the owner or syndicate came to sailing 12 Metres, the better our chances become for like-minded people to say: "Hey that's pretty cool, I'd like to speak to them about getting my own 12 program together." If you would like to participate or have suggestions for interview candidates, please contact me.

Challenge 12, KA-10
Challenge 12, was built by Steve Ward for the Perth Western Australia based Challenge Syndicate and used as a trial horse for Australia II. She was completely dismantled, restored and upgraded to the highest standards in 2007, fitted out with a new single extrusion mast, carbon winches with a new North Sails inventory in 2009. One of the few "modern" Twelves with the very attractive low free board, she has been stored inside for the past several years... learn more.

A Message from Fleet Captain, Herb Marshall
Greetings to all, I hope everyone enjoyed the racing and competition last season and let's push to get more at the start line this season. Suggestions are always welcome, but only if there's a name attached. The 2015 12 Metre race schedule has been posted on the Class website and is also listed below. Please note that our annual Newport Trophy will be a 3-day event and held in conjunction with the Newport Regatta, July 10-12 (Friday - Sunday). I'd like to encourage all 12's and crew to participate in the Leukemia Cup on June 6th. The "cause" and competition are great warm-ups to the following weekend's NYYC Annual Regatta. Throughout the winter, I have had numerous discussions with fellow ITMA officers reiterating the Americas Fleet's strong desire for a World Championship event in Newport. Along with officers in the 12 Metre Yacht Club, spearheaded by Commodore Jimmy Gubelmann, we are looking and planning long-range towards events in 2017 and 2019. A big part of making these events happen is securing multi-year sponsor/sponsors to work alongside our Class and Fleet. What we are offering and who we know is key to making a viable presentation, so let's make a concerted effort to seek-out and secure sustainable partnerships with sponsors. Updates coming... Herb
