Well, the busy summer has officially come to an end; no more long hot days spent in the barns and arenas with our four-legged friends. We hope you all had as much this summer as the NRCHYA Officers did. Before you get back to your school work, take a few minutes to read about what all the NRCHYA Officers have been doing to grow the sport of reined cow horse:

AQHYA World Show

The 2015 Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Show in Oklahoma City was very well attended this summer! The reined cow horse portion of the show kicked off with an incredible youth clinic hosted by Todd Crawford, Russell Dilday, Sam Rose and Brad Lund, on the Tuesday before competition got under way.

A large number of youth, both competing in reined cow horse and in other disciplines, participated and audited the clinic. All of the youth attending were very complimentary of the trainers and the clinic overall. The NRCHYA would like to give a big THANK YOU to the trainers involved and to Cowan Select Horses for donating the cattle for the clinic.

Boxing and working cow horse prelims were held on Wednesday, August 5 th . There were forty-eight entries in the boxing, youth limited, class this year and thirty-nine entries in the working cow horse or also known as the bridle class. Fifteen finalists were brought back to compete on Friday, August 7 th . Cutter McLaughlin from Commerce, Texas, was the working cow horse champion, with a total score of 452.5 riding CD DEE VEE DEE. The reserve champion in the working cow horse, with a total score of 438.0, was Stephanie Helsen from Auburn, Washington riding A CAT CALLED RED. Hope Miller from Bend, Oregon, was the boxing champion with a total score of 433.5 riding VERY SMART RICO. The reserve champion in boxing, with total score of 432.0, was Lannie Jo Lisac from Pueblo, Colorado, riding SOULANOVA.

The NRCHYA would to congratulate everyone who competed at the 2015 Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Show on a great show season! We look forward seeing you all there next year!

National Reined Cow Horse Foundation Youth Scholarship Program

The NRCHA offers multiple programs, fundraisers, and activities throughout the year to encourage youth members to get involved. One of these programs is the National Reined Cow Horse (NRCH) Foundation Youth scholarship program. This scholarship program is a way that youth members can be rewarded for their achievements.

At the end of each show season, every qualified affiliate has the opportunity to reward the Youth Bridle Champion with a $500.00 scholarship, and the Youth limited Champion with a $250.00 scholarship. To be eligible the youth must have competed in a least 1/3 of NRCHA shows held by their qualifying affiliate. No double judged, double pointed shows or two NRCHA shows in one day in the same location will be approved. The recipient of the scholarship must a current NRCHA member.

The application process is simple. Your qualifying affiliate must turn in the NRCH Foundation Affiliate Youth Scholarship application information by December 1 of the calendar year to the NRCHA office. Scholarship winners are awarded certificates at the NRCHA Celebration of Champions in February of the following year. When it comes time for college, scholarship winners can access their scholarship money by completing the Scholarship Award Request Form, posted online, and return it to the NRCHA office.

We strongly encourage our affiliates to utilize the NRCH Foundation Scholarship program to reward the youth for their achievements and to encourage participation within the sport of reined cow horse throughout the year. The NRCHYA would like to remind our youth to follow up with their local affiliates about making sure these opportunities are being used. This show year, let's take advantage of the great programs that the youth are offered!

National High School Finals Rodeo

The first year of Reined Cow Horse in the National High School Rodeo Associations was a huge success! The newly added sport of reined cow horse had over 100 contestants its first year at the National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, WY, this summer.

To kick off the completion, the NRCHA hosted a clinic Saturday, July 11 th . Top NRCHA Professionals Chris Dawson, Zane Davis and Matt Koch spent the day working one on one with each participant. The clinicians focused on the cow work, answering many questions and relaying the importance of safety in our sport. Random drawings were held throughout the day for prizes ranging from splint boots to training DVDs to a pair of Rios of Mercedes boots. We are pleased to report clinic participation and attendance was very high.

Sunday, July 12 th started the first go-round competition, and Wednesday morning, July 15 th , was the start of the 2nd go-round. The finalists are determined based on their aggregate scores from the first two go-rounds. The Top Twenty were invited back to the finals held Friday night, July 17 th . Congratulations to Wyatt Fisher and Nu Cash Cutter for being the first National High School Rodeo Association Reined Cow Horse Champions! With over 100 contestants, history was made; it was a wonderful turn out for the new event being held in the association.

I personally really enjoyed meeting the kids throughout the country; they shared their aspects to the events and also shared their experiences in qualifying for Nationals. I really loved how everyone was open minded about this event and was willing to learn, being supportive for each other and also wanting the event to grow for more years to come.

We would like to thank Carol Rose for her tremendous support and sponsorship of our partnership with the National High School Rodeo Association. Thank you to Carol Rose for coming out to the finals to personally to hand out the awards and to cheer on all the contestants. The NRCHYA would also like to thank Jerry Kimmel Reining Horses and Bluebonnet Feed for their support. Without these great sponsors, this partnership would not exist. We all need to thank the National High School Rodeo Associations for being very supportive for the new event and really helping us look forward to the future.

Youth - remember to promote the Smart Chic Olena raffle!

One lucky winner will receive a 2016 breeding to National Reined Cow Horse Association Two Million Dollar Sire SMART CHIC OLENA , as part of a benefit raffle for the National Reined Cow Horse Youth Association.

Trevor and Tiffiny Bond, of Smokin Gun Performance Horses, have donated one live foal guaranteed breeding to Smart Chic Olena for the 2016 breeding year. Frozen semen will be supplied to
a single winner using a low dose insemination by a deep horn insemination process.

As an additional bonus, the NRCHYA will nominate Smart Chic Olena for the NRCHA Subscribed Stallion Program, to make the resulting 2017 foal eligible to compete at the NRCHA Stakes as a 4- and 5-year-old.

Tickets are only $50 each. The winning ticket will be drawn in Ft. Worth, TX during the World's Greatest Horseman competition.
