"What does it mean to be an adolescent in the community?" and other questions about health and well-being are the focus of WAVE, a study on the Well-being of Adolescents in Vulnerable Environments. This global project conducted by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health spans six cities and includes some enlightening research involving youth in an East Baltimore neighborhood.
Dr. Beth Marshall and Dr. Kristin Mmari, researchers from The Center for Adolescent Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, will present their findings during a keynote address at the
Presbytery of Baltimore's leadership conference on Race, Class and Poverty at its 869th Gathering to be held from 9am to 4pm on Saturday, Nov. 14 at First Presbyterian Church of Howard County in Columbia.
One fifth of the world's population is between the ages of 10 and 19 years old and many of these young people are disconnected from the support they need in understanding and dealing with serious health issues that could affect their lives irreversibly.
Adolescent health remains an underserved part of the healthcare care agenda. Findings from this study aim to make a measurable and sustainable difference in programs that improve the well-being of young people, particularly in low-income communities.
A joint effort between the Center for Adolescent Health (CAH), the
Urban Health Institute (UHI) and AstraZeneca, the WAVE project is a study of young people living in disadvantaged urban communities in Baltimore as well as cities in South Africa, China, India and Nigeria. The study explores adolescents' perceptions of their health and health care utilization. It also highlights the underlying structural and social factors for promoting health and well-being among youth in disadvantaged urban environments.
Insights from the study are expected to be used by government bodies and health organizations to understand better the health priorities of youth and to improve resources for severely challenged adolescents.
