'Slow' brings about thought, more pleasure, and fundamentally more creativity

"In an epoch of speed one must think slowly." So said the great Russian poet and novelist Boris Pasternak. This dictum could very easily sum up The Slow Movement. Those as unfamiliar as me to this world-wide phenomena would have been fascinated and intrigued by the Slow Media Symposium I attended recently, organised by Bath Spa University at their stunning campus in Corsham.

There is Slow Food, Slow Cities, Slow Travel, Slow Schools, Slow Art...the list goes on. One of the leaders of this movement was the key note speaker at the event, Carl Honoré who has written a seminal book on the subject and who spoke eloquently, passionately and extremely convincingly about the methodology, which in his words, is about 'doing less and thinking more.' It is about 'a process of deep reflection' and this is what has struck me most as it has a huge amount in common with the work that we do here at Creativity Works. We often speak of depth, reflection and connection in our work and in the process involved in socially engaged art and these exist also as the pillars of the Slow Movement.

It is not, however, just slowing down for slowing sake. It is understood that by slowing down at the beginning of a journey, you are faster and more effective at the end. Well, we know this already don't we having read the Tortoise and the Hare? 'Slow' brings about thought, more pleasure, and fundamentally more creativity. The methods are now being adopted by some of the most high profile organisations in the world such as Volkswagen, Puma, IBM and BMW. These companies adopt Slow Technology, where devices are turned off at certain times of the day and staff are banned from sending emails from home before or after work, amongst other concepts.

I am really excited by the possibilities of the Slow Movement and will definitely be exploring in more depth how it can influence our work both in our delivery and in our office-based practices. Please do get in touch if you have experience of this world or are interested in exploring it with us. And thanks to Dr Daniel Ashton FHEA Senior Lecturer, Media Communications and Creative Media Practice at Bath Spa for introducing it to me and for creating such a brilliant symposium.

Now, I am off for Easter and am going to put my money where my mouth is by having a very 'Slow' holiday!

Happy Easter to everyone from Creativity Works!

Mosaic Pops Up Again in the Bear Pad

Fine dining at its finest!

The second Mosaic pop-up restaurant at the Bear Pad community cafe in Bear Flat on 12th March was fully booked with not a single seat available to passing trade on the night. Volunteers from Bath Mind, Creativity Works and St Mungo's worked together to present a four course feast demonstrating cultural traditions from around the world. This was fine dining at its finest..... and all at the bargain price of £20 per head, including tea or coffee.

As the animated buzz of conversation rose it was frequently punctuated by laughter as diners relaxed and enjoyed themselves. The clean plates after each delicious course showed that everyone was having a great evening out. Ben Howlett, Conservative parliamentary candidate for Bath, demonstrated his interest in the mental health and disability agenda with his enthusiastic presence. He tweeted, "A huge thank you to Bath Mind for their amazing company tonight at their pop-up restaurant raising money for mental health services in Bath."

The volunteers made a superb, friendly and efficient team in the front of house, as well as behind the scenes in the kitchen. They all contributed their skills and energy to ensure a good time for the diners. Some had developed new skills by taking the certificated Food Hygiene course.

Customers also had the opportunity to buy premium homemade jams from the St Mungo's enterprise based in Mulberry House. Their chilli, garlic and ginger jam was served as an accompaniment to the starter course of samosa and filled puri. It was superb: flavoursome and warm in the mouth but avoiding stinging heat. Yum!

Mosaic was selling copies of their popular recipe book "Mixed Spice" with forward by local celebrity chef Michael Caines. What a bargain at £5! (If you have not got one yet, place an order by emailing mosaic@bathmind.org.uk.)
