AskBarbara
AskBarbara
Dear AskBarbara,

My son is in 6th grade. He is very busy with after school sports and Hebrew School. This year he is getting much more homework. Several nights he has waited until the last minute to do something or has forgotten to finish an assignment.

To be perfectly honest, I'm helping him a lot and have even finished some of his work for him. It is really important to all of us that he do well in school and he gets so overwhelmed and upset when he feels unprepared.

I'm concerned that we have already gotten into a bad pattern because now he knows that I will help him out if he gets into a bind but I don't know what to do.

Thanks for your help,

With gratitude
So many to thank for so many fabulous auction items!
Our annual Online Auction and $100 Pull would not be possible without the generosity of so many who donate incredible items.

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) awarded 21 grants totaling $2,670,588 under the Minnesota Job Skills Partnership (MJSP) to train 1,333 lower-income individuals.

The Low Income Worker Training Program grants will cover the cost of training for 'training-ready' individuals with incomes at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty line.

We are thrilled to announce that JFCS and
Prime Digital Academy have received $192,500
that will support 25 IT Pathways participants in advanced training delivered by Prime Digital Academy, a licensed private career school with the Minnesota Office of Higher Education and the only Minnesota-based coding boot camp.

The Campaign for Disability Employment is a collaborative effort to promote positive employment outcomes for people with disabilities by encouraging employers and others to recognize the value and talent they bring to the workplace.

Their inspiring new PSA "Who I Am" showcases individuals who are not defined by their disabilities.

What an irony it is that as we move ever closer to holidays with big meals and a big focus on eating, food shelves both local and far away struggle to feed those whose pantries are scarce.

October through January is often the most difficult time each year for food shelves aiming to assist those in short supply of adequate and nutritious food. It's not just individuals and families with the most need who rely on food shelves. Working-class families whose budgets get really stretched at this time of year as they wring out more of their paychecks for heating, warmer clothing and back-to-school necessities often depend on the assistance of food shelves.

At JFCS, a group of staff and volunteers gathered on Oct. 21 at PRISM food shelf in Golden Valley. In early 2015, JFCS and PRISM conscientiously formed a partnership intended to help people served by both organizations. The group learned about the real needs of our neighbors and the services provided by JFCS and PRISM. Many of those who attended the gathering are planning to commit regularly to volunteering at the PRISM food shelf.

As you plan your Thanksgiving feast, holiday menus and prepare for making your favorite special foods, consider how you might be able to help someone less fortunate than you. Contact Jaye Snyder, Food Security Director at JFCS ( [email protected]) or Deb Savitt, JFCS Community Involvement Manager ( [email protected]) for more information.

Though I have no scientific proof of this, I'm pretty sure that for every holiday treat you indulge in, you are required to contribute in some way to making someone else's holiday more tasty...it is only in that way you avoid putting on 10 pounds!

October is National Disability Employment
Awareness Month

This month, and every month, we recognize and celebrate the value and unique talents that people with disabilities bring to the work place.

Our Vocational Rehabilitation Department provides highly  personalized services to individuals with disabilities who are seeking to improve their work lives or find employment.

JFCS Senior Employment Specialist Justin Elvebak worked diligently with Laurie, a wonderfully talented JFCS client who has a learning disability, to find her perfect job at her favorite grocery store! Read this touching story here.

Caring Connections celebrates Simchat Torah

JFCS' Caring Connections group of Jewish adults with developmental disabilities joined Adath Jeshuran Congregation for an especially wonderful Simchat Torah celebration called "Hoagies a nd Hakafot".

After services and dinner they joined in the singing, dancing and marching around the sanctuary with Torah in hand. The group felt
so welcomed into our Jewish community, and it allowed our program participants to celebrate a Jewish holiday in such a warm and meaningful way!
