B 50 Years Ago at CSI
In 1965...
In preparation for the bond election the trustees adopted the seal of the college. Within the circular seal, in the lower front, stands a pillar of learning. Next to it is a lamp of knowledge followed by two gears that depict technical education. Upon a road to infinity rests a gem representing the Gem State. All are surrounded by a wreath. At the top, the college name surrounds the wreath, and "1965," the year of establishment, decorates the bottom.

Make sure to send us your fun fact, picture, newspaper article, or  50th Anniversary idea to share in eNotes!

MariachiMariachi Anyone?
Looking for sufficient interest across campus (not limited to music department) in establishing a Mariachi Ensemble.

With the large Hispanic component of our Magic Valley population, it seems unfortunate that we do not have better representation of what is now considered the national music of Mexico, which has evolved, with numerous outside influences, from Mexican folk music dating back to the 1500s. The genre had its roots in what is now known as the state of Jalisco, west of Guadalajara. It is my aim to recreate this music in our area, using local musicians, and performing regularly, including a concert or two each year.

Members need not be music majors, but just reasonably proficient on their respective instruments. The following may be needed:
  • 2-3 trumpets
  • 2-3 violins
  • One vihuela (essentially a tenor guitar), for which a standard guitar could be substituted
  • One standard guitar
  • One GuitarrĂ³n (a very large acoustic bass guitar)
  • (Optional) Marimba
As many as possible of the above should also be capable of singing reasonably well, although this is not necessarily a prerequisite, as we can get by with only one or two of the ensemble members actually doing the vocalizing.

Note that this list does not include any saxophones or drums (sorry folks, but we want this to be authentic). Also note that some of these spots may be tentatively filled already, but please check with me. If you're interested, please contact at gconley@csi.edu or 732-6762.

ConvocationCSI Convocation

Thanks to an amazing team for collaborating and pulling off another successful Convocation! This year students were given the opportunity to listen to guest speakers Bryan Wright from Wright Physical Therapy and Kalie Wright, the current Miss Idaho. The Student Affairs Office and Admissions Office worked hard to put something together that would be meaningful and engaging for our new incoming freshman. A memorable march from the Fine Arts, around the tower, and then into the Gym was a new tradition this year as students prepared to meet others in their program of study.

BrownBrown Bag Survey

No more summer cat naps. The beginning of the semester is here! Brown Bag Learning Communities (newish name) will be starting up in September. I have modified the survey questions to reflect the responses I received in last week's survey.  If you are planning on attending a Brown Bag event, please take this survey. If you won't be attending, please don't take the survey. I really appreciate your input on this, and I'm looking forward to beginning our Fall 2015 Brown Bag Learning Communities soon.

Additionally, we are expanding the days and offerings, and are looking for interested people to help take on a leadership role in these learning communities. If you are interested in being a host/leader for any of the sessions, please let me know. I have someone for the Wednesday noon and Friday morning event, but I need someone for the Tuesday noon or Thursday 1:00 event. Thank you all so much.

September 3, in the CSI Fine Arts Auditorium

Don't miss the chance for you and your family to see your little dancer live on stage with the Eugene Ballet in their annual production of the holiday classic, The Nutcracker, which will be performed on December 3.
