On Saturday, September 29, 2012 at The Bain Center in Harper's Choice Village Center, HC DrugFree hosted a Town Hall Meeting where a panel of local experts discussed the growing issue of prescription drug abuse. The event was part of The Partnership at Drugfree.org's national campaign, "The Medicine Abuse Project", and was sponsored by Proove Biosciences, Inc.

Every day in the U.S., 2,500 youth age 12 to 17 abuse a prescription pain reliever for the first time. In the U.S. alone, more than 15 million people abuse prescription drugs. This is more than the combined number who report abusing cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants and heroin. By survey, almost 50% of teens believe that prescription drugs are much safer than illegal street drugs. Teens say that home medicine cabinets are their source of drugs. A majority of teens (79%) say they know where their parents keep their prescription medicines. Two out of five adults (42%) say they have leftover medicines from past prescriptions. Nearly two-thirds (63%) of these adults report keeping their medicines in case they are needed in the future.
