The Livable Cities symposium is a public event that will provide a platform for visionaries from across the disciplines to share and discuss the future of urban life.

Cities never stop changing, but the changes occurring today are unprecedented. The majority of the world's population now lives in cities and this trend will continue. Cities around the world are facing complex challenges as a result of increasing population, inadequate infrastructure, poor social services, escalating health problems, and the challenges posed by climate change.

The question of how to sustainably develop urban areas is inherently interdisciplinary; no single perspective can address the challenges cities face today. This is an exciting time in the history of Portland as the downtown and surrounding neighborhoods undergo transformations that have prompted both hope and anxiety amongst our communities.

Livable Cities will interrogate and celebrate the process of urban change offering inspiration and reflection for the future.
