In 2015, the Humanist Service Corps (HSC), a program of Foundation Beyond Belief, placed volunteers in Northern Ghana, where they are working to restore dignity to women who have been accused of witchcraft and banished to "witch-camps."

Although the women are relatively safe from violence once they are in exile, the living conditions are deplorable. They do not have access to basic education and healthcare and they are unaware of or are unable to exercise legal protections under Ghanaian and international laws.  The Humanist Service Corps is currently partnering with Songtaba, a coalition of fifteen grassroots women's rights organizations to help these women and often their children.

While in the field, Humanist Service Corps volunteers support Songtaba's operations and work with the locals to  design and implement yearlong healthcare, clean water, shelter, and education projects. The short-term goal is to improve the standard of living in the witch camps; the long-term goal is to eliminate the dynamics which lead to death or forcible and violent exile of women from their communities.

THE HUMANIST SERVICE CORPS IS HUMANISM AT WORK

We can't elaborate enough on how important this work is. The Humanist Service Corps volunteers have designed and are implementing projects that will improve the standard of living of the women and children banished to witch camps and eventually hope to eliminate the dynamics which lead to death or forcible and violent exile of these women from their loved ones.

On this #GivingTuesday, please help us, help these Ghanian women gain safety and security and education with your donation to the #HumanistsCare Challenge.

We.. they.. desperately need your help to make this year long trip worthwhile and make a lasting difference in their lives and their communities.
