Help for New England Churches
|
The Session of UPC recently received a special request from the Presbytery of New Hope to join them in sending aid to our New England churches. During the especially harsh winter, many of the churches were unable to hold services for seven Sundays in a row! More than half the churches are struggling with structural damage and financial issues. North Carolina presbyteries, included our Presbytery of New Hope, are raising awareness-and funds-to help support the churches as they recover.
If you would like to help with this request for assistance, please send in your donation by this Sunday, June 28, to PO Box 509, Chapel Hill, NC 27514. Make your check payable to "University Presbyterian Church" and write "Relief for New England" in the memo line. Our contributions will be transferred to the Presbytery of New Hope and then go directly to the Boston Presbytery, where the funds will be distributed to churches in need.

Sign Up: Meal Service for UPC Families
|
We are compiling a list of members who would like to take a meal to families with newborns. We encourage you to sign up if you have not already done so.
Bringing home a newborn is an exciting time, but it also comes with anxiety and exhaustion. In those early months, having a meal delivered is a real gift. We would like to provide that for UPC families.
If you'd like to participate, please email Lou Pons at or call her at (919) 967-1809. You'll be contacted as needed to choose dates that work for you.

Reflections on the Tragedy in Charleston
From Associate Pastor Anna Pinckney Straight
|
As many of you know, this congregation has multiple connections to Charleston, South Carolina. I grew up there. Bob Dunham served a congregation there before moving to Chapel Hill.
Many of you have written expressing condolences and compassion (thank you), and many of you have written asking about any connections I might have to the pastor of Emanuel AME through our shared name, Pinckney. I posted something on my Facebook page this week on that topic, which is also shared here.
The cover piece for the July edition of The Chimes is also a reflection on what happened (and is happening) in Charleston. I hope these words will open a door to deeper conversation and prayers.
Thank you,
Anna

Parking and Construction Update
|
Construction has begun! The house at 212 East Rosemary Street has been torn down, which is the first step in rerouting Robertson Lane and construction of the addition to the education wing.
Please keep in mind that during construction, the church parking lot will be unavailable for parking. If you need to come to the church during the day, please plan to park in the parking deck at 150 East Rosemary St. or at metered street parking. Parking tokens and vouchers are available in the church office for the parking deck.
As construction continues, we will continue to post pictures of the progress on the UPC Facebook page. To view all the pictures, search #BuildUPC on Facebook. We encourage church members who post pictures or updates regarding church construction to use #BuildUPC. Stay connected!

Punch on the Porch this Summer
We Still Need Volunteers!
|
Please join us this Sunday on the porch outside Vance Barron Hall after both services for fellowship over punch and cookies. Punch on the Porch runs from June through September.
We still need volunteers to serve in August and September! All supplies are provided. If you are able to volunteer, please click here to sign up online. Be sure to list your name and any friends or family members who will be serving with you.
It's an easy and fun way for families and/or your group of friends to volunteer and serve the church, and children of all ages really enjoy serving the punch and cookies. We hope you will join us!

The Church Office Needs Volunteers this Fall
|
The UPC church office has just ONE volunteer shift that needs to be filled: 3rd Friday afternoon of the month (12:30-4:15). Friday afternoon shifts will begin again after Labor Day weekend when the church returns to regular office hours. Summer hours are Monday through Thursday 8:30-4:30; Friday 8:30-12:30.
Please consider volunteering for this monthly shift to help out the church office staff this fall and share this information with any church members who may be interested. Responsibilities include welcoming visitors, answering the phone and simple clerical tasks. If you're available, or if you'd like to volunteer as a substitute instead, please call Shelley Adams at (919) 942-2525. Or click here to email Jennifer in the church office. Thank you!

We look forward to worshiping with you!
