Airtel Hotel Owner Jim Dunn Dies

Jim Dunn, 70, owner of the Airtel Plaza Hotel in Van Nuys, died Monday, September 14th of health care complications. In addition to running his hotel, Dunn served on the board of The Valley Economic Alliance and as co-chair of the Aviation Policy Committee for the Valley Industry & Commerce Association.

A former fixed-wing and helicopter pilot, Dunn combined his love for aviation with his love for the hospitality industry by opening a hotel across from the Van Nuys Airport. He hosted many community events at his hotel and was involved in airport policy issues.

He helped bring community recognition to the Van Nuys Airport, and even integrated a reconstruction of the hangar from the film "Casablanca" into his hotel. Dunn commented in a Business Journal interview earlier this year that the project was "for fun, not finance."

Jim Dunn received the Valley of the Stars Economic Engine award in February 2010 from The Valley Economic Alliance. Photographed are David Fleming Chairman Emeritus and Jim Dunn.

Billboard campaign touts new Village at Westfield Topanga

When Matti Leshem scored the gig to create the billboard and ad campaign for The Village at Westfield Topanga, he settled on a reality theme, sort of his personal love story about the City and the San Fernando Valley.

Kenn Phillips, President and CEO of The Valley Economic Alliance, said Westfield marketing brilliance should reap a big bang for their billboard bucks.

"Billboards are a great way to advertise, especially those close to the freeway get a lot of viewers. Westfield continues to lead the industry in brand recognition because they know their customers," he said.
