JWA December Newsletter 2015

A Message from our Chairwomen

Dear Friends of the JWA,

We cannot thank you enough for the support you showed us at the Bazaar Sunday, November 29th. What a day it was! Thank you for joining us and a special heart-felt thank you to  our generous donors, sponsors, suppliers and volunteers; we truly could not have done it without you.

The dappled morning sun cast a glow over the Island School playground as our 250 volunteers gathered to set up their stalls, start cooking, and unpack and display more than 1000 cartons of donated goods - yes, you read that right! 1000 cartons of cutting edge homewares, designers clothing and hot-selling toys, among other things. Not to mention the delicious food stalls and undoubtedly the best falafel in Hong Kong.

Eager shoppers with a keen eye for a bargain lined the pavement outside Island School from  8 am, shopping bags at the ready, excitedly waiting for the gates to open, and they were not disappointed. Approximately 1400 adults visitors walked through the gates that day, and it is thanks to the tremendously supportive crowd that we raised upwards of HK$500,000 at the Bazaar this year! To see photos of the day, click on: http://jwa.org.hk/photos/ or on the JWA Bazaar 2015 Facebook page. You may even find a photo of yourself!!

The funds raised will truly go a long way to supporting and continuing the charitable programs we are committed to supporting in Israel and Hong Kong in 2016.

Finally, a special thank you to  our friends and  4 4  volunteers from the Evangelical Free  Church of China, Baptist Church, Alliance Church, Hephzibah Evangelistic Centre Church and Peace Evangelical Centre who worked tirelessly at the Bazaar in support of the Jewish community, Israel and the JWA. It was a pleasure having you.

A special thank you must be extended to Elsa School Bazaar Committee for managing the Kids' Kingdom and Book Stall.

Last but not least, we must thank our amazing Bazaar Team: Raz Alcobi, Sarit Azrielivich, Yael Bronner, Natalie Lever, Sharon Magnagi, Hagit Razon, Aviva Shabat, and Amy Tadelis, led by Irit Balas Rozner and Shani Brownstein.

Thank you again and see you next year,

Shani and Marissa

Spotlight on a JWA Beneficiary

Beneficiary of the Month - Hayim Association

The Hayim Association is a charity set up in Israel to care for children and their families affected by cancer. It was founded in 1984 by the parents of children with cancer to raise funds for the treatment of these children. Support is given to all children without distinction of race, nationality or political conviction.

The association's achievements include:

  • Operating medical centers throughout Israel;
  • Funding medical research, medical equipment and positions in the oncology department of various hospitals;
  • Providing support in the medical wards and at home, working together with the medical staff and social workers. This includes setting up and funding transportation services to and from the hospital for patients; and
  • Giving financial assistance to families of patients, including organising day trips and providing play rooms, class rooms and tutoring in hospitals.

In 2014-2015, the JWA donated over USD$100,000 that will fund the building of a treatment and recreational room at Schneider Hospital for teenagers who are undergoing cancer treatment as part of a project set up by the Hayim Association
