Basalt Chamber of Commerce
Seeks Applications for Board of Directors

The Basalt Chamber has played an increasingly strong advocacy role in town decisions and developments. At this critical time in Basalt's growth, the Basalt Chamber is inviting involved, dedicated citizens to join the leadership Board of Directors to help maintain a positive, influential voice in the community. Voting will take place in January 2016 for four vacant seats. Applications and nominations must be received by December 31.

To support our current objectives, we're looking for professionals with experience in new business development, marketing and tourism, business education, non-profit management and fundraising. Board members are asked to play an active role in the Chamber's programs and development and help to build the volunteer strength of the organization through committee leadership and support.

The Chamber has increased in membership to nearly 500 over the last year. We invite Chamber members old and new to consider this important opportunity to shape the future of your community. To receive an application, please email us

Aspen Skiing Company Will Locate Key Staff in Basalt

Aspen Skiing Company (ASC) last week completed their purchase of the 28,380 square foot commercial and office space in Riverside Plaza on Two Rivers Road, a prime downtown location formerly occupied by Total Merchant Services. They anticipate moving in employees in the spring. A more dynamic relationship between Basalt and our preeminent business neighbor opens a world of opportunity. At Tuesday's Town Council Meeting, CEO David Perry and VP of Sustainability Auden Schendler said the company considers this a "great opportunity" and looks forward to playing a more active role in the community. With a 500-bed shortfall for their 3,600 winter staff, affordable accommodations are top on the list. ASC is a values-based organization with a long-time commitment to sustainability, a perfect fit for our valley and community.

Choosing Basalt for "Remote" Work Convenience

More than 71% of working Basalt residents travel up-valley for their livelihood. Enabling people to work where they live, coupled with lower commercial rents in Basalt, makes good business sense. Basalt has a fine assortment of comfortable, convenient office space. For large upvalley employers like ASC, Pitkin County and the City of Aspen establishing remote work hubs could significantly increase personnel efficiency while reducing travel time and lightening the load on the roads. It makes economic sense and it's great for Basalt and the valley.

Element Basalt-Aspen Opens in Warm, Classy Style
It was pure pleasure walking around the new Element Basalt-Aspen hotel in Willits yesterday. Spacious lobby-breakfast combo room looking across a sunken sitting area to an open courtyard with firepit, tables and winding walkways. Well-equipped exercise room and elegant swimming area. Sleek mini-conference room and convenient work spaces. (I confess the main floor conversation was so engaging I've yet to see the rooms but hear from first-night guests they're picture perfect.) General Manager Michael Welly reports that reservations are coming in steadily and they've already reached 70% occupancy for the holidays. Stop by every Tuesday night in December from 4:30 to 6:30 for an Open House and tours and watch for more special events (and local discounts) in the months ahead.

Willits Town Center Marches On
Capping off an epically-long meeting this week, filled with new young faces, the Basalt Town Council reviewed and voted for first-reading approvals of proposals from the Willits Town Center to:
  • allow an additional 59,500 square feet of commercial and 31,500 of residential space at Willits Town Center (WTC);
  • share new town sales taxes generated at WTC above 2015 levels and endorse a separate 1% private fee on sales for a limited time.

Willits developer, Mariner Real Estate Management, said the proposed expansion is consistent with the original concept and that the added space will be used for reallocation of development not an increased building footprint. Town consultant, Bruce Kimmel of Ehlers financial advisors, supported both decisions as a "good solution" that protects the Town's interests and keeps a key project moving in a positive direction.

Protect Your Business from Fraud during the Holidays  entrepreneur

Soaring sales during the holiday season can give your small business the boost it needs to end the year on a high note. Unfortunately, scammers and fraudsters are eager to grab their share of your profits. Last year, VeriSign-an Internet security and web domain company-noted that fraud grew in proportion to e-commerce growth with fraud reducing a merchant's bottom line by 3 percent to 4 percent.
Don't let these thieves turn an otherwise prosperous holiday sales season into a nightmare.

Follow these simple steps to protect your small business this holiday.

We have a terrific bunch of applications for 2016 Basalt Business After Hours mixer hosting. A half-dozen more or so of you planned to send in your applications. We'd like to put all the information together and create a schedule in the next few weeks.  Please submit your application this week so we can include your business in the mix for this or other networking events.

We're also collecting names of non-bricks and mortar business owners who'd like to get the extra visibility and build community connections. If you don't have a storefront and would like to co-host an event, let us know and we'll help you find the perfect match.

Applicants must be members of the Basalt Chamber in good standing. Preference will be given to those who've not hosted an event in the last 12 months and for creative and collaborative themes.

Business After Hours are an important Chamber networking benefit. Hosts have an opportunity to showcase your businesses and connect informally with other members. Download your application here and email it by November 1 or mail it to Basalt Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 514, Basalt, CO 81621.
