Dear Devotees,

Spring is a beautiful time.   Blue bonnets are blooming in front of the Sai Temple, and red roses are sprouting in the new rose garden that surrounds three sides of the  Sri Venkateswara Temple.  The flowers remind us of Sri Krishna's words:

If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it.
- Bhagavad Gita 9:26

Now is a good time to pick fresh flowers to be offered on the altar of love at our homes.

With great devotion, Pandit Phani Kanth has been performing VANA DURGA parayana from 5:30-8:30pm during this Spring Navaratri.  Tomorrow (Friday) Punditji will perform Vana Durga havan for Durga Ashtami in the Homa Kunda, 9:00 am - 12:00 noon.  The Vedic mantras in Vana Durga are really wonderful - they are all the bij (basic) sounds of the Divine Mother. They can remove all negativity from our lives.

On the following day, Saturday, Pundit Srinivasa Achi will perform Sita Ram Kalyanam, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm.  This day is called Sri Ram Navami. It celebrates the birth of Ram, whose very name gives liberation.   Sri Rama Navami is an auspicious day and widely celebrated in Shirdi.  Come to give your respects and take Darshan from Sri Shirdi Sai on Saturday, and also witness the Sita Ram Kalyanam.  Lunch prasad will be served from 12 noon - 1:30 pm.

This week, the Temple needs:
  • Chips small packets (50 bags per box @Costco) to feed the homeless on Sundays.  4 boxes needed by Sunday (200).
  • 200 water bottles - for Sunday Sandwich Seva, drop at the kitchen before Sunday.
  • Wheat bread for Sandwich Seva - 11 loaves by Sunday
  • Sesame/Til oil - to light daily oil dipams for all Gods in the Sri Venkateswara Temple and Baba Temple.
  • Prasad for Thursday - to offer to Sri Sai, at 6:30pm & 8pm.
  • Raisins and nuts - any type, to offer as prasad to devotees coming for darshan.
  • Rice -  10 or 20 lbs bags of Sonu Massori rice.  The Sri Venkateswara shilpis (religious artists) eat 10-20 lbs of rice a day!  Donated rice is also used to prepare prasad for devotees on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.
  • Devotees may drop off any donated food items in the kitchen pantry/closet.  Thanks to the many people who donate food items to the temple!
With loving regards,
Craig Sastry
FROM SAI BABA

The statue of God, the altar of sacrifice.  The holy fire. The light. The Sun. The water.  The Brahman (God).  All are venerable, to be worshipped.  The Sadguru is far more sublime than all of these.
Quote of the Week

Labor to keep alive in your breast that little spark of celestial fire, called conscience. - George Washington, first President of the United States

Did You Know?  Kirkland Whole Milk... Volunteers

Did you know?  From time to time, people bring KIRKLAND ORGANIC WHOLE MILK as a donation to the Temple.  Because it contains FISH OIL, we cannot offer it to God
or use to cook prasad.  Instead, it is served to the temple kitty cats, who enjoy it very much!

Students can get volunteer hours by visiting the temple for Sandwich Seva, every Sunday morning, 8:30 am - 9:30 am.  For other special projects for students, please contact [email protected].

You can bring cooked vegetarian prasad (no onions or garlic, please) anytime to be offered to Baba and served in the kitchen.  The best days to bring are Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.

If you like working outside, the temple always needs help with landscaping - raking leaves, pulling weeds, planting vegies.  Contact [email protected] or see Craig or Jill next time you are at the Temple.

The Temple distributes more than 2000 meals a month to the hungry in greater Austin!  Thanks to the many devotees and volunteers who make these programs happen (Sandwich Seva and the School Food Programs).  For more information on the School Food program, contact Shanti

Cosmic Story:  Dakshinamurty

According to legend, Lord Brahma had four sons. They were named Sanaka, Sanadana, Sanatana, and Sanat Kumara.  Born with righteous natures, they did intense tapas and analysis for many years to find the Ultimate Truth.  After much effort, they still did not feel satisfied that they knew the Truth.  They sought out the highest knower of truth, Lord Shiva, so that he could explain to them the Ultimate Reality.

Lord Shiva was sitting in a yoga posture under a banyan tree.  The four sages sat around him.  Shiva stayed in his yoga posture, and no one spoke a word for several days.  Just by sitting with Shiva, who appeared as Dakshinamurty, the four sages learned the Ultimate Reality.

Wise men say "God speaks in silence".  This story embodies that truth. Some sages say that when one realizes the Truth, the mind gets immersed in bliss beyond words.  Others say that this Bliss is beyond the mind.  Whatever the case, the SAT CHIT ANANDA (truth-consciousness-bliss) is beyond words. It has to be experienced to be realized.  To know an ice cream cone, one has to eat an ice cream cone. Someone telling you about ice cream in words will only make you hunger for it.  It will not give direct experience.

Some people despair of gurus and say "since truth is inside me, I will find it myself". This is fine, but there is another reality.  Wise men say "we become like those we associate with."  If we associate with thieves, we will start thinking like a thief.  If we associate with the enlightened, we start behaving as if enlightened. The great souls are like radio towers, broadcasting the vibration of GOD REALIZATION. Merely sitting in their presence is enough to get purified.  Words are not necessary.
