Dear Dragons,

There are titles to be won, road trips to be taken, home turfs to defend, early mornings and late nights. And its only Week 2 of the CABC Athletic Enewsletter. Come along and join the adventure.

CROSS COUNTRY:

Cross Country continues to test itself with an elite schedule, this week traveling to the Marcus 1 meet where they totally controlled the meet on the gentlemen's side. Reed Brown lead the way for SLC and the Boys Elite Varsity team of Brown, Charlie Gardner, Michael Waugh, Shea Whatley, Chase Haddock, Nic Fernandes & Timou Toure took the team title triumphing over 2nd place by more than 70 points.

The Lady Dragons finished in 2nd place led by Tig Archer with a 7th place overall finish and the Varisty Girls Elite team also had a strong showing. Alison Esparza, Sarah Odneal, Gillian Mortimer, Kayli Jones, Cate Tracht & Ali White also had a great day.

Up next we must protect this house, aka Bob Jones Park, as the Cross Country teams turn to their temporary home course at Bob Jones Park for the Southlake Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 5th. If you think you are up to it trying jogging through this course! Check out the course map below.

FOOTBALL:

Football travelled to the capital city of Texas this week to take on the Austin Westlake Chaparrals in a battle of an 8 time state champion vs. the alma mater of Drew Brees. The game would come down to the very final play. Westlake jumped out to a two score lead with a pair of opening half touchdowns only to see the SLC magic bag of tricks be delved into once again as happened multiple times in 2014.

Zach Farrar caught what was seemingly a simple bubble screen, took one step, stopped on a dime, stepped backwards behind the line of scrimmage and then lofted a ball downfield. Abracadabra, where did Lil'Jordan Humphrey come from? But there he was, waiting at the 4 yard line. First and goal, Lil' Jordan finishes the drive off a play later with a plunge into the end zone. 14-7 was the score at that point in favor of the home standers. Westlake would unfortanutely counter with another touchdown before the break. A missed extra point would leave the tally at 20-7 at half. Southlake would score first and as it turned out deliver the only points of the final half midway through the 3rd quarter. A methodical workman like drive would end with Humphrey's second rushing touchdown of the night. Jake Oldroyd's extra point was good and with a quarter and a half to go SLC was as close as they would get within 6 points. Midway through the 4th quarter the Dragons would have a golden scoring chance but it was not to be and a Jake Oldroyd missed field goal left the score the same with just 3:49 left in the game and set the stage for the game's frantic final moments.

A nice stand by a steadily improving Dragon defense gave the offense one final chance to fight their way back. They would face a 3rd and 20 in the game's dying moments. With 27 seconds left, QB Montana Murphy scrambled for his life with the game on the line from a dogged Westlake pass rush. Just before falling out of bounds, Murphy would complete a Houdini act, lofting the ball from the left sideline back across his body into the waiting arms of Lil'Jordan Humphrey. He cradled it at the Westlake 5 yard line. 1st and goal but SLC had not timeouts left. Tick, tick tick goes the clock - setting the stage for the aforementioned final play. Murphy throws a high desperate fade into the end zone but there is no magic left and Westlake wins 20-14. Unfortunately a nearly two year long regular season winning streak goes away, but there are many chances left to improve, starting this week at Tulsa Union.

Friday, September 4th the Dragons will hit the road again for their first ever out of state road game at the 8 time state champions Tulsa Union Redskins. Remember last year's classic? Game time is 7pm in Tulsa. Tickets are on sale at Dragon Stadium Thursday from 8am-4pm but no sales Friday as to allow for travel time. Tickets are also available at CHS and CSHS during lunch time. $10.00 General Reserved tickets are on sale as well as $7.00 Adults and $4.00 students.

VOLLEYBALL:

Volleyball had a sparkling 10-0 week - Yes that is 10 matches played and 10 matches won. Or for some persceptive the equivalency of an entire football regular season. The Lady Dragons began the avalanche of victories by defeating Abilene at home on Thursday night with a sweep. They then rolled into the Plano Circle of Champions Tournament, first defeating Plano West, then Grapevine, then Highland Park. Next came No. 2 Allen, then Prosper, Westlake, and Pearland before facing the Lady Scots again in the tournament title game. No problem as the Lady Dragons delivered another straight set victory 25-21, 25-16 to claim the PSA Tournament Championship.

Haley Hallgren (pictured above), 6-1 junior OH, was named the Plano Circle of Champions MVP and Libero Brayden Gruenewald (pictured below) controlled the back line with several key digs.

But wait...what about the key match on the road at 4A powerhouse Lovejoy, you ask! In head coach Ryan Mitchell's return to the place where he captured 5 state championships, the Lady Dragons captured 3 games in a nip and tuck sweep of the Leopards, defeating them 25-20, 25-23 & 25-23. When the week is rounded out LDVB is now 26-3 overall on the season and ranked No. 1 in the state by the TGCA and #3 in the Texas Top 20 by LoneStarVolleyball.com.

Tournament season has concluded but a challenging road test at Rockwall is up next on Friday, September 4th at 6:30pm at Rockwall. District play is just a week away but two more matches will close out the non-district portion of the schedule first. After Rockwall the ladies face Byron Nelson at home on Tuesday, Sept. 8th at 6:30pm.
