Nestled between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday is a time when shoppers are asked to fill their carts at smaller, hometown stores (like Ben Franklin Apothecary) rather than driving to giant department stores. As a small business, it's tough to compete with Black Friday deals. American Express started "Small Business Saturday" several years ago to drive awareness of the importance of shopping local and it's a great reminder to consumers on the busiest shopping weekend of the year to remember to support their favorite locally-owned, "brick & mortar" store.
According to research from
IndependentWeStand.org, if every family in the country spent just $10 a month with a locally-owned, independent business instead of a national chain, over $9.3 billion would be directly returned to local communities through sales tax dollars, payroll, donations, and other expenditures.
We've really started to see an amazing trend as shoppers show their support for their favorite small, locally-owned business on that particular day.
